Making 1-1 Kitty Time On A Thai Monsoonal Caturday

It is definitely ***Caturday*** when one *chooses* to sit, for a whole luxurious hour with one of the kitties, and give her time.  No pushing her aside to make room for the laptop on one knee, while I hustle to meet an entrepreneurial deadline.  But just letting her spread out & snooze and giving her as much unconditional presence as she gives to us, day in day out.

5.30am and my internal auto-alarm woke me as usual to the sound of pouring rain.  My only 16 year old child, who never has to quibble or fight for 1-1 time with her only active parent, was at a girly sleepover.  ***Oh luxury.***

I put on my 18 year old Australian satin PJs that I rarely wear here and certainly never sleep in, but it was unusually cool for Thailand. It was defiinely a slo-mo, self care kinda Caturday morning. I made a pot of fragrant organic green tea, fed the 4 cats and wandered upstairs to enjoy the dawn in my favourite wooden chair by the upstairs living room window.  *And just sat.*

Miss Cinnamon came up for a snuggle.

She is our only girl cat, and always at the back of the pack.  Yes, we have 4 adopted cats - all strays or surplus somewhere at the beginning of their lives.  The 3 boys endlessly jostle for position.  At food time Cinny (as we affectionately call her) eats last.  No amount of putting her food separate from theirs changes this.  *It seems to be a naturally agreed cat thing that the girl will eat last.* 😭 We keep her food separate so she doesnt get less, but she won't touch it till the boys have scoffed and sauntered away. 

She sleeps on one of our beds most nights but is the lowest maintenance cat and the least demanding.  And subsequently she probably gets fewer cuddles and less dedicated kitty-mama time. 

And so this was her moment.  *Or many moments, as it turned out*.

She groomed herself.  And snoozed.

Several times she looked at me with mild incredulity that I wasn't pushing her aside to make way for the laptop, or bustling around doing laundry.

And so we sat in silence.  ***For a whole relaxed hour.***  I watched her ears twitch at every distant sound, and felt her rumbling in purry happiness. Probably if I could purr, I would have too. 

I reflected on how much cats GIVE and how little they need, really.  Except food and safety and loving attention.  I'm mindful of how challenging it can be to have 4 cats at times, and  try to give all of them committed time.  *Sometimes.* 

It was like a meditation to simply sit with her.  Nothing really to think about, except marvel at this creature's trust.  Nothing really to worry about.  Nothing really to DO except BE.  After all, **isn't that what cats are here to teach us?**  

After an hour, the rain had stopped and, being Thailand, the early sun was heating up and had already dried off the roof.  Cinny suddenly opened one eye as if to say, ***"You're STLL here?!?"***  And then my Cat Guru jumped off my lap and sauntered out onto the roof, for more grooming on the roof, waiting for the Saturday sun to heat up some more.

She IS just such a sweet and adorable and undemanding creature.  She asks for little and is soooo giing of her smooches whenever we stop long enough to give her opportunity.  

She is, most definitely, a mindfulness guru sent ot teach the art of just BEing.

I actually think the four cats own US ... 😆  cos cats are like that - they choose you. We live in a huge old Thai teak house with 2 storeys and a big garden - they have LOADS of private safe space and a gerzillion snakes, lizards and frogs to amuse them.  It's quite the kitty paradise really, with trees to clinb and a nice roof to sun themselves on without the hassle of having to climb.

I'm frankly amazed you'd only spend 1 hour with such an adorable thing! I'd be like 2 hours at least and you definitely need those slow days from time to time... I mean, I'd like them all the time if there's a Miss Cinnamon in my household (there isn't, sadly 😢)

How lovely to be able to relax and really enjoy those moments with Cinny!
Cats really do have a way of relaxing us and slowing us down to live more in the moment. 
My cat has his certain times of the day when he comes for his power pats and it's very hard to resist giving him big cuddles! He is over 20 years old now, the last of the 6 senior citizen cats we had.
