The Energy of Things: Minimalism to Turn Down the Cacophony
It's always seemed odd to others when I have explained it, but it is what is is. The energy of things, patterns and noise jars very easily for me. Disturbingly so, when the objects feel dissonant. Wearing a patterned blouse can literally leave me frazzled, anxious and feeling ***noise***.

And so it is with clutter, with antique and thrift shops, with competing energies, with distraction and with things that seem to contradict one another energetically. Today I threw out a perfectly good leather handbag that someone had given me eons ago, cos the energy that radiated from it felt dirty and distorted. Whilst normally I would donate something like this, today the only "right" thing I felt to do was to throw a relatively expensive handbag in the trash. *It seemed wrong to visit that on someone else.*

I almost always wear plain colours. T shirts too - I can't stand irrelevant messages nor any words on them - it literally itches and *irritates me* on an energetic level, and so they're plain colours too.

Minimalism, for me, is about the orchestration of the "stuff" in my life - music, correspondence, objects, books, people - to create an energetic harmony into which my soul can sink and say, ***"Aaaaaahhhhh"*** as if sinking into a warm bath. I have learned that I need that energetic harmony to stay well.

My journey towards minimalism started long before I had ever heard the term defined. When I moved from Australia to Thailand close on 20 years ago now, I took everything with me. 71kgs in total across 2 suitcases and 1 carry on. 20 books, 20 CDs. LOL. Yup, pre-spotify. I left nothing behind except 1 small carton containing a few winter clothes that I knew I might need for a return visit. 8 years later when I finally returned for my father's funeral, I got rid of even that last hook and remnant of another life. When people tell me they've come to live in Thailand but have left a storage locker (or 3! πŸ˜†) behind in the US or wherever, I just laugh. Minimalism, to me, means also not burdening another with the remnants of life one can't manage or face either.

This year I thought about committing to a Hive personal posting challenge to **"Discard One Item Every Day & Blog About It"** for the whole 2022 New Year. Cos after 20 years and motherhood for 17 of those, I have accumulated more stuff than I'm comfortable with. Relatively, we live light. Very light. I shall always remember with a chuckle when a Dutch cousin visited 3 years ago, looked around our home and asked, *"Where's all your stuff?"* 🀣 Apparently young Lars, at the tender age of 19 on his first solo travel experience, had never met anyone who doesn't have a mantelpiece overloaded with knick-knacks, photos and memorabilia.

I ummed and aaahed about the full years commitment, and wondered if I had enough stuff to do that, and whether I'd actually feel comfortable about disclosing each release publicly. My Hive guru-mentor @riverflows had already remarked that committing publicly to a daily posting habit rather set one up to fail. And it was while I was pondering this idea, that The Minimalist community contest showed up in my feed.

In August 2022, my 17 year old daughter - my only child - will leave this solo mama behind as she heads to Europe and university. We've already talked in depth about the changes to her life, and mine, which are coming. I expect to be living much lighter as my business expands and changes up, with my life spread over 4 locations - Hpa-An in Burma, Mae Sariang and Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand and, funds willing, maybe a beachside bolt-hole in Sam Roi Yod on the Gulf of Thailand.

I've been bingeing on tiny house living videos for their simplicity - I find them *comforting* in a time of turbulence and change. And considering what I'm ready to release.

Minimalism, for me, is not about having almost nothing. It's about having curated, high quality, multi-function, harmonious pieces which reduce the ***noise*** in my energetic field and enable me to find deep rest. It's about energetic simplicity, which is as much about colour and form as not having 63 mismatched items.

I'm thrilled to find this new community and grateful to @millycf1976 for a wonderful initiative in creating a space for this simplifying, conscious-consuming energy. Inviting @plantstoplanks and @mamrita to contribute to a fabulous new initiative in The Hive. And looking forward to contributing regularly to an important dialogue in a world overflowing with "stuff".

#### Grateful. Blessed.

Hello @artemislives, your post and the energy behind things evoked a lot of reflection and I will most probably continue reflecting on this throughout the day and seeing things differently.

I found myself nodding when you mentioned plain no message shirts. I didn't realize that such messages were related to the noise but it's absolutely true. Discarding things a day is inspiring.

It's funny but I was looking at someone else's tshirt with a stupid message this morning and EVEN THAT gave me a feeling of irritation. LOL.

I was raised and born in a rural village in Vietnam. Back to the time when I was small, we didn't have enough food and clothes for our normal lives. However, my Mum and my great-grandmother still managed to feed us well and have clothes to wear. They taught me how to use stuff efficiently to save resources. For example, keep water after washing rice and vegies to water plants in our garden or feed our animals, how to cook meals so we have enough to eat without wasting it, or how to re-use second hand stuff for things that we need.

Seeing the peaceful and simple life that my great-grandparents had at the end, I know and understand what is important in our lives. That's why I love a simple lifestyle and always live that way. I am never intererested in chasing a materialistic life, never get stuff because they are on trend, just things that I need and bring value to my life.

Thank you for sharing your thought. I love the idea of writing a post when you discard an iteam or give it away. Just yesterday, I tidy up my house and donated good stuff that I don't use any more. Maybe next time I can do a post about them as well

I live here in Northern Thailand and I know EXACTLY what you mean!! Yes, yes and yes. The big one for me is seeds.... I HATE throwing them away. So I have started growing them in upcycled contained and giving them away. Feels good.

Really appreciate you stopping by. We love Vietnam and (before Covid) would go often to Hoi An & Da Nang. Miss it very much and hope for borders to reopen.

Oh that's a great way. I recently read a post about keeping the seeds after eating fruits then putting them on parks, walk ways, hiking tracks so they can grow instead of rotting in the dump field. I practice it and feel so great.

I am so glad that you love Vietnam. I also miss our country and would love to visit my family soon.

If you follow me online, you will see we make balms as an employment project for the displaced refugee communities along the Thai Burmese border. While you're right about diet SHOULD be sufficient for great skin, thankfully for me and my business, almost no one eats that well. πŸ˜† The balms we make are multi-purpose, sustainable and last for eons. In recyclable-reusable containers.

But a great & relevant question. Thanks.

Thank you for the invite πŸ™‚

I resonate a lot with what you are writing. I would say I have been living rather minimalistic over the last 5 years or so but since I'm back in my flat in Stockholm it's easy to accumulate too much stuff. I was actually planning on going through my storage space in the basement this week but unfortunately, I'm sick at the moment. It'll have to wait a bit. But just as you are writing it's the energy for me as well.

Hello @artemislives, your post is enlighting and a little frightening...don't be alarmed :)
I have been doing a lot of energy work through Qi Gong, that is taking me back to my true self. I identify with what you've said about colours, distractions, and the energy they expel (the Cacophony πŸ’― %).
I feel you on that handbag, and applaud you for such considerationπŸ‘

> Minimalism, for me, is not about having almost nothing. It's about having curated, high quality, multi-function, harmonious pieces which reduce the noise in my energetic field and enable me to find deep rest. It's about energetic simplicity...

I feel you on this one:)

Thank you so much for sharing this with the contest. I've enjoyed reading your post:)

I'm enjoying quietly reading some of the other contributions on the New Year's eve - and feeling into what I want to create this coming year. It all starts with energy and harmony, and consciously creating the space to allow that to evolve and grow effortlessly.

So excited about the way Hive creates and allows and enables niche interests and encourages people at the fringes of a chaotic world.

Happy New Year, and well done on a first great contest.

Hello again, I went for a long walk in nature, and just returned. I thought it was a good idea to clear and re-energise my mind.

Yes, I'm learning and seeing different perspectives to minimalism that I'm absolutely loving.

Wishing you a Happy New Year, and best wishes for 2022 :)

> I almost always wear plain colours. T shirts too

This is so me. I just feel upset every Christmas when my aunt gives me a t-shirt as gift--every year! I don't want to be rude and tell she doesn't need to. I have like 3-4 t-shirts that I wear all the time until they turn into garbage. I then I see young people, my age, exchanging a fuck ton of time so they cn afford to buy expensive clothes.

Oh I feel so much more NORMAL reading this LOL. I hate advertising tshirts, brand names and PATTERNS. Shudder. They make me feel edgy when I wear them, like I've had too much coffee!!

Bless your aunt who hasn't ever stopped to really SEE what your preferences are - and it's fine to regift stuff or donate it. I buy mostly second-hand clothes now - there's an amazing business here in Thailand that buys container loads of second hand clothes from the US and Japan - super high quality, trendy, good sizing for my 6 foot plus self LOL. And yes, I'm gob-smacked that someone threw it out.

Let there be more calming neutrals and classic plain colours in our orbit!

Love seeing this new community pop up. Thank you for bringing it to my attention @artemislives! Though lately I think the biggest thing I've been minimizing is my time on Hive, haha. I'm sure I'll be back in the swing here again soon. I was actually just speaking with a client this morning about his goal to pick at least one item every day this month to sell or donate in an attempt to minimize his possessions.

I love getting rid of things, but also need to get better again about not buying so much. Damn USA consumer culture is tough to opt out of, but I keep trying each year to be more cognizant of what I buy and where I buy from. Thank you for the reminder to stay the course!

I had kinda been missing your content but yes, also been a bit patchy the last 6 months. Missed you!!

How about recruiting your client to Hive and inviting him to POST every day in this new community about his Letting Go choices?? Great accountability!!

Happy New Year, Katie. x

Thanks for bringing a fresh perspective to minimalism. It was the same for me when I started practicing minimalistic lifestyle, I had no idea what is is about, but one thing I know for sure that it makes me feel better about owning stuff.
I'm also curious about how you and your daughter doing it.

I think the main way we are "doing it" is TALKING about it. I KNOW my daughter likes to be surrounded by pillows in her bed and that they have a limited lifespan here in sweaty Asia. Yesterday I saw some cute ones and offered her the chance to replace some of her old pillows - and she declined! "I'm leaving Thailand in August, mama, and it would be a waste." *I'm continuing to be incredibly proud of the aware young woman she's becoming.* Mostly I've learned that SHE has to come to it in HER way, and it's not a lifestyle choice I can push on her. Cos if I do that, she just pushes back and hoards more.

Appreciating your comment contribution. 😍
