Zooming In - How Micro Focus Changes Everything

"Take a step back and see the big picture!" is advice that is flung around indiscriminately.  And sometimes that's helpful and enables us to feel part of a bigger whole, a community, a movement.  

*Sometimes.*

But increasingly, I have been finding the macro picture disabling.  Discouraging.  Overwhelming.  Whether it's looking at the 973 "urgents" to do on my entrepreneurial desk, or the extreme state of environmental collapse in the world around me, or the gaping, weeping chasm that seems to grow wider between men and women.   International politics?  Perhaps best illustrated by a group of official people literally carving up someone in 7 mins flat on a table in a 'safe' embassy somewhere, which leaves me both incredulous and feeling despair.  Big Pharma trying to dominate and control even the cannabis supply?  Anger and profound frustration.  And the eternal US driven ping-pong-see-saw-bluster as her citizens seem increasingly less engaged in changing things?  Borderline numb after decades of it.

But in a bored, irritated moment earlier this week, a teacher arrived.  

We were in a large formal garden.  It was pretty hot and I was grumpy.  Ploi, my 14 year old daughter was off exploring the far boundary of a fairly drab part of the said garden, while I simply stood under the shade of an ordinary palm tree and my soul screamed silently, "I just want to see something *gorgeous* and inspiring and beautiful!"   For no apparent reason at the time, I idly snapped a close up of the palm tree trunk beside me as I waited, a little curious about the patterns.  And then Ploi came back and we wandered off to find prettier things to engage with.  

It wasn't till much later that day that I LOOKED at that image, and was able to see and acknowledge my teacher.

My teacher's name is Focus.

When I really LOOK at the micro, there is So Much Beauty.  And magic.  And power.  And possibility.  

I struggle to find light or solace or delight from THIS:

But THIS ignites my Being to all that survives and thrives when it shouldn't be possible.

The only difference is Focus.  And zooming in to make it manageable.  

I can't possibly listen or hope to understand the complexity of the hopes and dreams of THIS:

But if I change my focus (and give my attention) to THIS, I have a chance:

I'm still working on my groaning entrepreneurial "urgents" littering my desk.  :)  

I have learned (and am continuing to learn) that the antidote to overwhelm (of any kind) is the choice to Focus.  To zoom in, away from the distortion of the macro to the purity and clarity of the micro.  To savour and really SEE the incredible patterns and colours of the trunk of the palm tree.  To rejoice in the resilience of Mother Gaia in a veritable swamp of concrete.   To enjoy the moments of creativity and deep connection with my lovely daughter.  

It is always, always, always my choice.  And when I make that choice regularly - finding delight, beauty, nourishment and joy - I am empowered to tackle the macro once more.
