Okay, this may sound weird but this is my first time seeing or hearing about Ethereum classic and it’s surprising that there’s something called Ethereum classic and it's entirely different from the normal Ethereum that we know. Now imagine going to the market to buy Ethereum (ETH) and mistakenly buying the Ethereum Classic (ETC), you will definitely break down and surprisingly according to reports, it has been happening and is now a common occurrence.

***So here’s what you need to about the Ethereum Classic (ETC) and how it’s different from the normal Ethereum (ETH).***

I think last week I wrote about [hard fork and soft fork](https://leofinance.io/@attentionneeded/hard-fork-vs-soft-fork) and I explained what they mean and how they are formed. To get a clear picture of how Ethereum classic was formed, I will brush up on the hard fork and Hard fork occurs when nodes of an updated or new blockchain that has been developed do not accept or become compatible with the old blockchain, therefore, creating a new or different network that works in parallel with the old version.

So in other words, a hard fork on the Ethereum blockchain occurred or was insisted on by Vitalik Buterin after it was hacked in 2016 when over 3.6 million Ether tokens were stolen which caused a lot of panic in the Ethereum community that had to split to decide if they should continue on the same network that the hack occurred or reverse the blockchain and cancel the hack. But thanks to Vitalik Buterin we can say he made the right decision due to the market cap and the community came together and followed the path Vitalik Buterin chose which is now the Ethereum (ETH) and the one that the hack occurred on was the Ethereum Classic (ETC) and you can also call it the original or genesis Ethereum.

So since we’ve got a clear picture of the difference we now understand how they were formed. One is the genesis or original chain that was hacked (Ethereum classic); the other is the one that was reverted from the effects of the hack (Ethereum). And both chains have been working perfectly and receiving developments till today but the major difference between them is that the Ethereum (ETH) is governed or run by teams and the co-founders but the Ethereum Classic (ETC) is operated by a community which means anyone can participate.

Another difference is that the Ethereum classic uses a proof of work (POW) consensus mechanism, while the Ethereum (ETH) also uses a proof of work consensus mechanism but it’s likely they might switch to the proof of stake consensus mechanism. Some investors still believe the Ethereum Classic (ETC) will match the Ethereum (ETH) price because they look similar but due to low adoption it will be difficult to see that happen in the future.
