***Adapt, Adopt, and Improve*** is a theme my husband and I sort of developed out of necessity. I think the first time we consciously had to put it into action was on a camping trip. We were at a campground about an hour from home. If memory serves, only three couples were actually camping and the rest of the 'crowd' were just hanging out with us for the evening. We figured it would be an early night, because rain was expected. Everybody was kind of doing their own thing... some of us were prepping dinner, some others playing catch, a few were off gathering more firewood, and the rest were just sitting around the fire & talking. Next thing I remember is hearing my husband say - loudly:

FIX IT!

http://i.imgur.com/DDAB3dT.gif

([source](https://colemans.com/shop/military-tents/french-military-troop-tent/))
It took me a minute to see what had him so agitated. It seems one of the visiting guys tried to catch a wild pitch... and had landed squarely on our tent. Uh-oh. I give hubby credit, he walked away instead of decking the guy. I was hard pressed to fight that urge myself. So now the issue is how to fix the tent with a bent support pole. (This was pre-dome tent days. What can I say, I'm an old fart...lol!) We brainstormed a bit and came up with a temporary rig that worked. We scrounged up some sturdy branches and, with some duct tape one of the other guys had, sistered the branches onto the pole. It was surprisingly strong and got us through the weekend. Hubby even calmed down enough afterwards that he told the perpetrator, "Nice catch!". ***Okay, that's the adapt and the adopt part...*** The improve part comes in on another camping trip. We had been on a trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and had planned to camp on the last night before heading home. We had been staying in a cabin in the UP, but had our new dome tent with us and were looking forward to trying it out. Well, we arrived at what we refer to as 'Paul's Pack-Em-In Park'. Small sites around a pond they generously labeled a lake and more mosquitoes than I'd seen in my entire lifetime. First order of business was to set up the tent so we could escape the bugs. We take out the nylon shell, the stakes, and.... no poles. Really? Brand new box, never opened, and NO POLES!!!
http://i.imgur.com/aA67WtB.jpg?1

[source](http://uspatriottactical.com/rothco-camouflage-3-man-hexagon-dome-tent)
Hubby was getting chewed alive, because the bugs like him better than me, so I decided to take on the tent situation and ask him to start a fire for dinner. (Between Off! and the smoke, he can tolerate them.) After my own liberal dousing in Off! (hate that stuff), I set out to find some long sturdy branches. (Sound familiar?) Tape wouldn't work with what I had in mind, so I used some twine out of our emergency road kit. What we ended up with was a tipi-like set up. I supported the uppermost loop with the branches and raised it enough to sleep in - IF we kept the door screen directly overhead. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. I'd call that an improvement in skill and execution. If we hadn't had to deal with the first disaster, we would have been stumped for a solution the second time. Yes, we could have stayed in a motel, but that would have been admitting defeat. Not something anyone wants to do. Oh, and when we returned, we took the tent back to the store and told our story. They replaced it after double checking the new one did indeed have all the proper pieces. The ***Adapt, Adopt, and Improve*** method has rarely let us down and is now an integrated part of how we look at problem solving! *** (Disclosure: The tents pictured here aren't ours and are just for illustration purposes.) ***
FOR A CHANCE AT 2 STEEM, VISIT [ASK AUNT DEB](https://steemit.com/animals/@aunt-deb/adventures-in-pet-sitting-ask-aunt-deb-and-steem-reward-winners) and SUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS.

THE TWO QUESTIONS WITH THE MOST UPVOTES WILL BE NEXT WEEK'S TOPICS.
***

http://i.imgur.com/mLl58Nj.png
Upvote, ReSteem,

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

IDK which posts led you to finding me on here, but my first 2 posts I believe were both outdoorsy-bushcraft related to stuff like your camping adventures. I read your Steem GAW thing at the end of your post, so that seems to be new, since I read your posts and never have seen that yet. I need all the Steem and help I can get LOL So given that you asked for people to participate in that, I think this is a great idea I am proposing based on your very practical and DIY/ Lifehack nature you have adapted: ---- How many practical knots for daily use / camping / practical use do you know? And I challenge you and your husband and everyone reading this post as a matter of practicality )and who knows one day like your post here - it may be survival) -- to learn one knot/ commit to learning one new knot in the next 30 days. and to help everyone here are some super resources! (as in -- one of the world's best online resources for learning about knots, honestly!!) http://www.animatedknots.com/ and I tried to post a direct link here // is a direct link to one -- a very useful and easy one to learn, -- just practice it a few times. -- but it would not post the .png link here off the site for you guys. Best wishes everyone -- Barry

I just started the giveaway. First winners were yesterday. I plan on running it until at least the end of the month. STEEM gets eyeballs. Mostly, I just want folks to ask questions & keep the topics ongoing. I only have so many stories. LOL! You know, theoretically you could win 4 STEEM.... have the top two upvoted questions for the week. Now I've got YOU thinking.... Hehehehe! It was either camping stuff or my escape from mortgage lending hell. Probably both. I used one to survive the other back then. I love the knot challenge! I'll have to take a closer look because I know a few versions, but couldn't tell you what they're called. You're right, too, in that it's a very handy skill to have and not just for camping. Hubby and a friend once rigged up a temporary accelerator cable when the original broke - on the side of a Chicago expressway. Had to run it through the window & operate it by hand, but without a knowledge of knots, they would have had to call a tow truck. Btw, you can start your own contest... like a themed meme or photography contest... you get to decide the rules and prize(s). Plus, if you give @taskmanager a heads up, it gets included in that list. Heck, you're halfway there with the knot challenge! Keep on steemin'

You may not believe this, but with all the stupid problems on here lately, it dumped you off my followed list, like a bunch of other people!!! Are you still following me???? This is silly, some of these issues, honestly. Some I understand...... but the followers ACTUALLY dumped...... not just the display side issues that look like they are there but are not-- is kinda getting on my nerves now. I just had to re follow you. I had to say the same thing to @merej99 a minute ago too!!

In the back of my mind, I was wondering if I won anything for the post/challenge comment things here for my knots question etc a few days ago. I came back to check but have been wondering. I thought this post was a comment/challenge - ask Aunt Deb one but maybe I misread it.

I have a lot of bad camping stories involving tents (like the time my friend and I tent-camped in a severe winter storm). I made the switch to RV camping about ten years ago and love it! No setting up, no leaks, no roof collapsing under a load of snow! But I do miss tent camping because it offers more intimacy with nature than sleeping in the comfort of an RV or trailer.

Tent camping is definitely not for the faint of heart. We don't have a vehicle designed to tow or desire to handle a self contained RV, so we go the cabin route. Luckily, our preferred destination lets us do that. We didn't get to go this year. Bummer. Maybe this year....

Going to a cabin is probably more efficient than towing a large trailer cross-country.
