Running Away...

This photograph which I stumbled upon online, drew my heart into the sometimes sadness of an innocent child's life; it brought memories back of my own fears, heartache, tears and broken dreams.

https://images.pexels.com/photos/48794/boy-walking-teddy-bear-child-48794.jpeg

But, this post is not about me...it is about the pain and suffering of others; other children who may have had far more devastating events happen in their life.

As tough as times were for my family financially while growing up, we at least didn't have a parent, or parents with a serious drug, or alcohol problem. My sisters and I didn't have to suffer under the wrath of a mother or father who was experiencing a "psychotic episode" due to the wrong medication, incorrect dose or from having stopped taking their meds.

Child abuse comes in many forms, under two primary categories: physical and emotional. Abuse of a child can also be inadvertent or intentional, but abuse in any form, and for any reason, can have the same detrimental effect on a child. It can be so damaging, that residual effects may linger throughout their entire life.

Most children seek an escape from an abusive home life at some point, and many of them do, by ‘running away’. Unfortunately, the child who runs away from home, most often finds themselves in a worse situation then what they sought to escape from.

https://images.pexels.com/photos/246804/pexels-photo-246804.jpeg

KidsHealth.Org makes the following statement regarding children who run away from home.

“most kids run away due to problems with their families. Some kids run away because of one terrible argument. Some even decide to leave without ever having a fight.”

Further, they indicate some of the general problems that young people face, once they leave home for the ‘unknown’…

"People with no home and no money become desperate, doing anything just to meet their basic needs. Because of this, they often find themselves in risky situations that would be frightening, even for adults"

At about the age of twelve or thirteen, I decided to run away from home due to a poor relationship with my father. We had argued one day over something that I can no longer remember. I packed a few things into a large paper bag, along with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, headed out the door to a destination unknown.

At about a block and a half away, at the crest of a hill, one of the older guys from the neighborhood pulled up alongside of me with his father’s car and asked where I was going. My response was something like, “I don’t know…anywhere…” He then asked if I was running away, and I told him that I was.

Renee told me to get in the car; he’d drive me somewhere, so I did. We aimlessly drove around talking. He convinced me that I wouldn’t get very far nor survive, with the eight dollars and change that I had in my pocket. It was like having a big brother, who cared about me enough to talk me out of running.

Renee was not just older than me, but he also was French Canadian, spoke French along with English, so I thought he was a genius of sorts; especially with that foreign accent. Don’t ask me why, but when I was a youngster, a person with a foreign accent seemed more sophisticated to me…it must have had something to do with old movies I watched.

While thinking about the plight of a child who runs away, I did a little research into parental recommendations with respect to helping them recognize a child at risk, and how to proceed should their child run away.

https://images.pexels.com/photos/568027/pexels-photo-568027.jpeg

As often is the case, I stumbled upon an article written by someone who did a lot of research prior to me, and summarized perhaps better than I’d be able to do; which I’ve provided a link to below.

https://middleearthnj.wordpress.com/2010/08/30/teen-runaways-signs-prevention-and-what-to-do-if-they-run/

In closing, the featured photo that I began this post with was the spark to write on the subject, not knowing where I would be heading in the process. What I did know, that I’d write something of potential value for fellow steemians, who might have the same interest in @familyprotection as I do, for the service that they provide.
