Pomegranate season! @ BabetterPlace

Pomegranate season!

Slowly the pomegranates are getting mature on my trees here at BabetterPlace. The trees in the mountain area need some more time.

In Greek the name is ρόδι.

When I lived in Holland pomegranate are like a delicacy, buy some you spend a lot of money.
Here I see pomegranate trees everywhere. An abundance of this fantastic fruit.

When I bought the house here, I was thrilled with the 4 trees I have in my garden. 2 kinds, 1 is light pink from color inside and very sweet and 2 trees are dark red from color and a little sour.

The sweet kind can be used to make a fantastic pomegranate vinegar -what you can use for salads.
Very simple: clean the pomegranate and put the juicy pits in a glass jar and fill it up with white vinegar and leave it for a month there.
After you drain the liquid from the pits - you see that the vinegar becomes a little pink. I heat it up to 80 degrees with 1 spoon sugar and then in a glass bottle and it can be used.

The dark red sour pomegranates I use to make liqueur. Also a simple procedure.
Clean the pits and put them in a glass jar. Add sugar on top of it. Leave it in the sun for 1 day. Then add white vodka on it and leave it for at least 1 year there.
After 1 year drain it and put the liquid in a bottle. Cheers!!

Both pomegranates, the sweet and sour ones can be used for juices. I love these juices! I make them for my friends, neighbors and freeze them in bottles for the rest of the year.

From the juices you can also make marmalade with gelatin in it. Or mix it with other fruits to make marmalade from it.

I am sure there are more things to make with it, so if you have a recipe - let me know.

The sad thing is that last year I found out that my digestion is reacting very heavy in a bad way to pomegranate...
For me less juices. For my friends and family more!!

Aww @babetter - it is indeed nice to see all those lovely pomegranates on the trees. Like you said it is not a cheap fruit but I love the pure juice. I is interesting all the things that you can do with it. I would love to taste the liquer. Nice post.

This fruit is delicious and brings back many memories of my childhood and especially of my dad. 
We had a huge pomegranate tree that in season gave very big and juicy pomegranates but at home we used to eat them natural or prepare juice.
My dad used to take all the seeds out and put them in the blender, it is a very refreshing juice and I see that you have other great uses for it like vinaigrette and pomegranate liqueur. It must be simply delicious!

How wonderful it is that it gives you this memory. For me it feels like I am very rich, because in Holland it is a special fruit where we pay a lot for!
So you dad takes out the seeds, than blend them and than drain it that the little seeds inside goes out as well?

Yes true the vinegar and liqueur are great in taste, you must try that if you are able to. Where was your fathers garden located? Europe?

The truth is that it brought back very nice memories.
For the juice my dad used to take out all the grains, that is, he didn't squeeze them as I saw in one of your pictures, but he took out the seeds as you would do with corn for example. Then he put them in the blender with water and sugar and finely strained it. I don't know if I could explain.
I am in Venezuela! Very far away. We had that huge bush in my hometown in Sucre state and then we moved to isla margarita also in Venezuela and here we had some but never as big as the first one.
