The ethics of Legislation: Should morals matter?

Ethics and morals are interwoven. Ethics are simply moral principles that governs the way a person or a people behaves or conducts themselves. Morals are values or principles that guides our behaviors or process of making decisions and most times these morals are influenced by our culture, our personal beliefs or the way we were raised. Morals kinda helped us to distinguish between wrong and right and also to an extent influences how we relate to people around us. They are like personal code of conducts and are mostly instilled into us by our parents and the society at large.

Ethics vary from place to place, from people to people, country to country, profession to profession and from culture to culture. What’s an ethic in this culture may not be in another culture and what people tend to see as ethic or moral in their culture is different from others. For example. I know of a state in my country in which it is ethical for a man to give his wife to his best friend as kola when he comes visiting.

What I am saying is that in real life, if you are a married man, and your friend who is a male comes visiting, one of the ways to serve kola to show that you accepted your friend is to allow your wife to sleep with him. To them it’s a normal thing. While to another culture, they believe in not touching another man’s wife and it’s unethical and immoral to do that.

Professions have their different ethics that guide them such as doctors, lawyers, soldiers etc and everyone is expected to behave in a particular way. These ethics are not part of the countries law but are simple guidelines in smaller places that helps to check individuals and cultures.

Ethics and moral are interwoven into the country and no one is expected to just do anything they want and go Scot free. Generally, the law of my country has an incorporation of ethics in some of the laws in the area of business and governance and the people are meant to abide by these laws but the incorporation of these Ethics are mostly on official cases and do not boil down fundamentally to the grassroots of the society but that doesn’t mean that we all do not know what is right and wrong.

The fluidity of the ethics incorporation makes it easier for everyone to adjust to their different cultural and moral status-quo to do the right thing without conflicts or making one party or culture feel robbed in. Ethics and morals are definitely part of the laws of a country or should be but the extent to which it’s narrowed down is what matters.

I quite agree with this reflection. I also realize that, although there are professional codes of ethics — such as for doctors and lawyers — many of these principles are not written in law, but rather serve as a compass for expected behavior. In my day-to-day life, I see that laws incorporate certain ethical values, especially in more formal fields, such as business and politics. However, I feel that there is still a distance between these official standards and the reality experienced in communities, where local morals and culture continue to be very influential. This flexibility can be positive, as it allows general rules to be adapted to cultural specificities, but it can also generate confusion about what is right or wrong.
