People who are technically sound and interested in maintaining their servers typically opt for self-hosting the applications they need, as well as storing their data locally. This is a new trend that is gaining momentum, and we are seeing many people move away from the cloud and store their data. I might sound a bit contradictory because the whole world is moving towards the cloud, and that too to the tech giants, but not everyone believes that tech giants like AWS or Azure will be the future. 

This is one of the reasons why we still don't have all the applications in the internet fully on the cloud. Some people still hold their stuff in their own on-premises server and have no plans to take them to any of the cloud service providers. The technological change is only in moving towards cloud storage and not moving everything to big cloud companies. It is true that many tech giants provide a lot of convenience, but not everyone is willing to adopt that.

There are so many advantages in doing self-hosting, and I would like to cover some of them in this article and explain why people prefer to have things self-hosted instead of having them on cloud servers. 

## We own our data

The first and foremost thing is security. There are still people who believe it is better to have the money in their pockets instead of banks. That's why we still have a huge cash economy. With the help of self-hosting, we are able to get a strong grip on our data. 

## Learn new skills with the setup

When people try to do the setup by themselves, it is believed that they learn a lot of networking stuff and sometimes coding too, if they are too deep into self-hosting. Learning a new skill is interesting, and that can keep us very active. People have this as a hobby even though they can afford other alternative solutions. 

## Gain control over our digital life

We do so many things digitally, starting from browsing the internet to doing activities on the internet. With the help of self-hosting, we will be able to have some control over what goes outside and what comes inside, and this gives good control over our digital life. 

## Maybe save some money

Finally, with all the self-hosting setup, if we plan it properly, we might be able to save a lot of money with a lot of learning. It does improve our skills and at the same time, it makes us choose the best thing for our needs and lets us save some money. Some applications that we buy as a cloud service can be self-hosted and used for free. Image management and storage management can be an example of this.
