Chicken Coop Level 2: Upgrade Complete!
Hello Hive!

Another busy day on the Badger land.

We decided to expand our new chicken coop a little bit (about 3x the size) because we have opted against free range chickens and thought they could use a little space.

Plus, we want to get some more chickens next month and now we will have plenty of room to do so.

![0B6D9C011E6A45EEAC2B914EB166DE28.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/wxKM2RYQ-0B6D9C01-1E6A-45EE-AC2B-914EB166DE28.jpeg)

We had 60 degree weather yesterday and the kids were happy to help on the project.

The first thing I had to do was go out into our woods and cut some more fence posts. I had enough fencing left over from the original build so I didn’t have to purchase any new materials which is always nice.

I cut the 10 new posts and then began to dig out the boarder of the new fence. Putting the fence underground helps keep critters from digging in underneath the fence and adds a little security that there won’t be any holes in the fence.

![0389F1F60E174B909516C4B831DBAFF8.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/YsJoN2td-0389F1F6-0E17-4B90-9516-C4B831DBAFF8.jpeg)

Once the trenches were dug it was time to to hammer in the posts. I don’t have a sledge hammer so the back end of an old splitting axe did the trick.

![2C51D1620F32440A81D05533E3A81266.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/BgzwclI8-2C51D162-0F32-440A-81D0-5533E3A81266.jpeg)

After I got the new posts in I began to wrap the new fencing. Using my engineering genius, I pulled a length of the existing fence to fill in the back area of the new boundary.

![5F4DB1C5C1184A58A7D0B10F0843084A.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/6fCuc6p9-5F4DB1C5-C118-4A58-A7D0-B10F0843084A.jpeg)

Above you can see where the new fencing stops and the original will take over.

![955CCEC96CA64973AAFA9B36351F0AE0.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/oXDXyZa8-955CCEC9-6CA6-4973-AAFA-9B36351F0AE0.jpeg)

![5C8447C35F80425F99BF8371F9E353E4.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/x0SU3yNH-5C8447C3-5F80-425F-99BF-8371F9E353E4.jpeg)

A mornings worth of sweat and hard work and the chickens have a much larger area to play and forage for bugs and sticks.

Ahh, time to relax....

Nope!

So, the proudest moment of my day came after lunch.

You see, we didn’t have a gate built because my wife and I are tall enough to step over the fence and I never got around to it.

Guess it’s time to build a gate!

![6F36578602DB446A853EB951BC8615D5.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/balticbadger/geul8gYO-6F365786-02DB-446A-853E-B951BC8615D5.jpeg)

To start, I cut a piece of wood fencing in half we had left over from another project.

Then, I mounted some barn door hinges to it and found the rest of the would laying around and bam!

Best damn chicken coop gate you ever seen; complete with handle (high enough for a dDwarf) as well as a locking mechanism.

BTW I even buried a row of bricks under the gate so nothing can dig in our out.

Mark that up as a successful day.

Now, today, we have even better weather but I am so exhausted and sore I can hardly move.

Thanks for stopping by!

They are really fun and easy to have. Plus free breakfast and eventually dinner. I want a Rooster to try having chicks, that would be great for the kids. Then people can bid on those 🤣 I will export to the US

Just so you know, I am currently digging out 60' of rotten broken chicken wire from having buried it 6 years ago. It leaves nasty sharp points and as I, or in your case, chickens, are digging in the earth, they can be potential injury or tetanus problems. A drop of blood on a chicken can be a bloodbath in no time...

Yikes! That is an issue. I bought the galvanized stuff and we have to move in two years so I am hoping there will be no problems. We are buying a house then I will be setting up a much more permanent set up.

Regarding enclosing chickens you need a minimum of 10 sq. ft and 20 sq. ft PER BIRD is better. Give them as much space as you can. Mine have 40+ sq ft per bird and I still have the on and off issues.

There is a phenomenon called Chicken Math: they tend to increase quickly... :)) Having less space encourages behavior problems, such as picking.

Before you free range, you might want to investigate what predators are in your area. If anyone has seen even 1 in the last 3 years, be sure there's a population.

Also be aware, if you have raccoons (do you have them there?) they reach through chicken wire and rip off wings, heads, etc.

As a new chicken owner, I thought you might want to be aware of this, as you have kids....

Thank you very much! Right now the have roughly 100-150sq feet. And they are really happy!

We have foxes and Martens, no raccoons. We have a Jägermeister (Hunter) That traps them for us, haven’t seen a marten yet but the foxes are around. No incidents yet. I know martens are very aggressive but all our neighbors have free range chickens and no problems.

Question: we feed them a chicken feed powder (from breeder), scraps, and then they have a feeder in the coop of seeds and stuff. Right know we just throw the powder on the ground is that okay or should we use a dish? Do you have a rule for how much to feed them a day? I've been going off how many eggs they lay and if the poop starts to get runny I cut back a bit.

Here's a chart of feed requirements:

![Body weight and Feed Requirements.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmSVgsUKjzb4Ux12ifH7cPJwpnb8YiHE59CW8vpk7qmkYV/Body%20weight%20and%20Feed%20Requirements.jpg)

I would definitely use dishes, and set them up so the lip is level with their backs. Keep the dishes clean. This will help prevent waste. It will also make it harder for rodents to get at it.

Do you know if your feed has animal protein added? If not, I would strongly suggest feeding 1/4 oz/day/bird. This will help prevent behavior problems due to protein malnutrition.

I would go easy on scraps and grains. Too much will reduce egg laying due to nutritional imbalance.

How many birds, how old, and how many eggs/day?

Looking good. What made you decide against free range? Will you have veggies to protect?
I hope any new arrivals settle in okay. The original occupants can sometimes get bossy. I've just added a couple of pullets to my main flock and we have a fully enclosed run about 8ft high. I heard one of them squawking and flapping, looked over and she was at the roof of the run flailing about!! I wouldn't have believed she could get up that high if I hadn't seen it! Must be the araucana in her, poor thing, trying to escape the bullies.

Yes we really wanted them out in the yard but We have a young dog that hasn’t learned yet and large vegetable garden. Eventually, I would like to try it.

I’m hoping if I bring the new ladies in (black chickens, forget the race) with a rooster it will be ok but I have no idea what i am doing. We only have six now and I would like 4 more + rooster.
Or is that a bad idea?

I'm a convicted chicken addict, so how can I say that's not a good idea? If you want discouragement, don't ask me! 🤣

The only thing is say if make sure they're in a fox proofed shelter at night. Or does the dog keep them away? Are you getting australorps? You'll have to share photos when they arrive.
