유학일기 - 독립 기념일.

오늘은 미국 독립 기념일이다. 미국은 땡스기빙이랑 크리스마스 시기에 막 1-2 주씩 놀기는 해도, 평소에는 공휴일이 그렇게 많지 않은 편이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 독립기념일은 미국인들에게는 중요한 공휴일이다. 대부분의 가게들은 문을 닫고 사람들은 가족이나 친척을 방문하면서 시간을 보낸다.

사실 박사과정에게는 공휴일이든 아니든 사실 큰 상관은 없다. 매일이 휴일인 동시에 매일이 일하는 날이기 때문이다. 오늘 학교를 나왔더니 보이는 사람들의 공통점이 있다. 전부 한국인 아니면 중국인 들이다. 아무래도 가족의 품을 떠나서 홀로 공부하는 사람들에게 공휴일은 큰 의미가 없는 모양이다.

사실 학교에 나와 있음에도 연구를 거의 하지 못했다. 남들이 다 쉬는데 세상이 다 멈춰 있는데 나 혼자만 뭔가 열심히 한다는 것은 어색한 일이다. 사실 최근 몇주 동안 제대로 쉰 적이 없는 것 같다. 뭐 특별히 하는 것도 없는데 맨날 늦게 자고 컴퓨터는 너무 오랫 동안 봤다.

오늘은 좀 쉬어야 겠다. 저녁시간까지만 학교에 있다가 저녁먹고 집에 가야겠다. 가서 특별히 할 거도 없지만 그냥 집에 가서 잠이나 일찍 자던가 해야 겠다.
