Many of us are guilty of living like our net worth now is the same as it will be in five or ten years. As the uncertainty of the last two years has shown with the pandemic, anything can disrupt the social order.

If you're reading this, there is a good chance you own cryptocurrency. Maybe you bought it or earned it writing content on Hive. And if you've been in crypto for a while, you would be all too familiar with the volatility coaster.

You might remember riding this rollercoaster in 2018 if you were in crypto then.

It's easy to say, "you only lose if you sell", but it's completely ignorant of the one life fact: shit happens.

What would happen if shit happens tomorrow; your house burns down, you get hit by a car, you get a cancer diagnosis, or you get laid off from your job? Do you have savings? Do you have crypto gains (don't forget Uncle Sam wants his capital gains tax)?

There is no such thing as a safe bet. The world is volatile and uncertain. Look at big tech companies. Layoffs are becoming increasingly common as we head into 2023 and enter a recession. Once upon a time, working for Google or Microsoft was a safe bet. Now no matter where you work, you could be laid off.

The truth is, you probably don't have a plan B. You are living like the rest of us, "in the now", not thinking about what might happen when you wake up.

Sorry to be all doom and gloom. I just had an epiphany that nothing in life is safe or certain anymore. I am working on my plan B right now. I am growing my own food; I just got chickens and trying to be as self-sustainable as possible. So, if I lose my job tomorrow, my family still eats, and my savings will go towards the bills.
