The roles and importance of the witness nodes on the Hive blockchain

Witness nodes play a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of the Hive blockchain. As one of the core components of the blockchain's consensus mechanism, witness nodes are responsible for verifying transactions, producing blocks, and ensuring the security and integrity of the network.

The primary function of a witness node is to **validate transactions and create new blocks**. Witnesses are elected by the community through a voting process, and they are responsible for producing blocks and maintaining the blockchain's ledger. These nodes are also responsible for participating in consensus protocols and verifying the authenticity of transactions.

Without witness nodes, the Hive blockchain would not be able to **function efficiently or securely**. These nodes play a vital role in ensuring the network's integrity and preventing fraud, as they are responsible for verifying the authenticity of transactions and validating new blocks. Furthermore, witness nodes play a key role in ensuring the overall health and stability of the Hive network, as they are responsible for monitoring the blockchain's performance and addressing any issues or vulnerabilities that arise.

In addition to their technical role, witness nodes also play an important **role in the governance of the Hive blockchain**. I think that it is very important to cast [witnesses](https://peakd.com/me/witnesses) votes to support the blockchain and healthy community interests. And a great example of that is to support the @leofinance witness as it has proved the apport that it brings to the Hive blockchain. Also please notice that the witness votes need to be renewed as they expire after 1 year as it was introduced with HF25.

Do the votes expire after a year so long as you don't modify any of your witnesses or does voting/removing someone reset that timing?
