When in a new place... you really have to try and figure out what the decent breweries and wineries are! This is especially true when you relocate to the other side of the planet... and getting your old favourites would be prohibitively expensive even if you wanted to try and ship them out! 

So, I've been dutifully testing out the local brews, and as part of that effort, I have been ordering mixed packs of beers from some of the local breweries. Recently, I had ordered a mixed 24 from Capital Brewery... and it was pretty decent. Now, it is the turn of BentSpoke, another Canberra based brewery. 

I had tried one of their beers when I had gone out with my wife to celebrate a birthday... and it was surprisingly decent! Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was a local brewer as well! Sadly, at hat time, I had already ordered the mixed pack from Capital... so, I would have to wait until ordering the next batch!

... and under the guise of testing out our new post office box address... I ordered a few things to it. One of them being a delivery of beer to try and figure out how the post office box would handle larger deliveries that don't ordinarily fit in the mailbox. I had been instructed to use a "suite" address for the delivery... but when I went to collect it, I was told that that wasn't what I was supposed to do... so, now... I'm just a touch confused, but in the end... I've received every delivery, so I guess either way works.

The light blue brew on the left is the one that I had tried at the restaurant... a nice refreshing ale that was quite easy to drink and that would be perfect for summer.

The Red Nut is the one that I tried last night... I love red ales... I'm not exactly sure why, but I often enjoy the slight caramel-like flavour of it. I remember have a great one when I was studying in university, and then another time at a Mexican restaurant. I've generally been pretty happy with these ones... and the Red Nut was no exception!

Meanwhile, Barley Griffin?... a play on words... there is a large man-made lake that Canberra is designed around. Lake Burley Griffin... ha ha.

Finally, I also managed to get a mixed dozen of wines sent to the post office box as well! Well, there were a few extras... a picnic table, two picnic wine glasses, and a dessert wine. This was the introductory offer for a wine club, that was at a huge discount due to our membership with a car insurance company. Weird mix... car insurance and wine club... these are all cool/dry climate wines... so, likely mostly from the area around Canberra anyway!

... in the past, we have found that the introductory offers for these win clubs are the good ones. After that, the subscription starts and the quality drops off. So, we only went for the intro offer and didn't do the subscription. Besides, neither my wife nor I are big drinkers... so between the beer and wine, this should last us probably between 3 to 6 months!
