Naval Ravikant's philosophies on life have been hovering over me for the past few months.

They are so concise and accurate - it's crazy.

Here's one I've been thinking about for a while.

**"Life is about searching for who and what needs you the most, and who and what you need the most."**

Let's examine this.


# Who

Indicates that there is someone in an organization or in life that needs you more than anyone else.

Say for example you are a freelance writer.

A person who needs your service the most would most probably be a CEO who is good at business but doesn't know a content strategy. He could find other competent writers but he doesn't bother to. He looks for who's most available to him and somebody he can trust (which surprising a lot of powerful people still do).

When it comes to looking for love, the one that needs you the most and the one you need the most is the best fit there is.

# What

Indicates a cause or mission or industry. 

If you have always been good at writing, then the media industry needs someone who is very good at what they do.

Conversely, industries who have never been pioneered by media on a mass scale, say NGOs and social causes that need far more awareness would need you a lot.

Heck, some traditional businesses that never went digital would also need you to bring them online (still a very common occurrence in Malaysia).

# To sum up

Professionally speaking, other businesses or causes may need you a lot but do you need them?

A very straightforward way to look at it is in the form of money.

Sure, a traditional business needs your services but do you need their money?

If you are financially secure, you will wait till you get a better bid - another company you want to work for AND pays you the amount you want.

In your romantic life, there may be a few suitors but if you are not interested - it won't match.

You would wait till there is one.
