# Filetería

Una de las cosas más relevantes en los proyectos más elaborados son los adornos. Así que no se podía dejar este instrumento sin su fileteria para relatar el perímetro de la tapa armónica. Como ya tenía los canales hechos luego de una visita al taller mi maestro, era un tema de preparar las piezas para colocarlas.

Gracias a él, tenía estos perfiles de caoba y una tira de chapilla negra para la parte interna. Luego de hacer los cortes necesarios y asegurarme de que ambas piezas calzaran en la parte inferior del instrumento, fue momento de colocarlas.

Es un proceso un poco complicado. En especial, si se hace con solo dos manos. Sin embargo, no hay nada que un montón de cinta para enmascarar no pueda resolver. Luego, ajustamos con tiras de caucho para lograr que peguen al ras de la tapa. Finalmente, podemos rebajar los excesos y tenemos lista la fileteria.

### Bindings and purflings

This is an ornament that cannot be left outside any fancy project. We need to adorn the perimeter of the sound board. Fortunately, I had had the channels made during a visit to my teacher's workshop. So all that was left was to put them in place.

Thanks to him, I had both pieces, some mahogany strips for the bindings and back veneer for the purflings. They just need some adjustments to make sure both pieces meet at the bottom of the instrument. Once this was done, it was time to glue them.

This is a tough thing to do, specially if your only using your own two hands. It's nothing some masking tape cannot fix. After it's in place, we can adjust the fit with the help of some rubber pieces. Once it's glued, we can remove the excesses and we have ourselves some nice purflings and bindings to adorn our instrument

### Piezas externas

Continuando con el proceso, hay que colocarlo todas las piezas externas: golpeador, diapasón y adorno de clavijero.

El último es quizá el más fácil. Solo basta alinear esta pieza para tener un ángulo paralelo al diapasón. Una vez en su lugar, hay que hacer rebajes, cortarlo para darle forma y abrir los agujeros para las clavijas. Este instrumento va a tener clavijas de precisión. Por lo tanto, los agujeros son más grandes.

El diapasón de este instrumento es una dena madera conocida como Roble María. Es una especie de roble que crece en muchas partes de Venezuela. Tiene varios  colores interesantes. Esta pieza de diapasón tenía mucho tiempo lista oara pegar. Así que no hay mucho por explicar ahí. Utilizamos las líneas de guía para que nos quede derecha y con pegamento y prensas, queda en su lugar.

El golpeador es de la misma madera. Aquí lo complicado es volver a abrir la boca para que calce con la del instrumento. Luego hacer los diseños que nos parezcan intentesantes hacia los lados. Cuando esto está listo, se coloca.

Lo último que se hace es nivelar diapasón y golpeador con mucha lija y paciencia.

### External pieces

There are three pieces to address now, head stock, fretboard and strum guard. 

The former is the easiest. We just need to make sure the piece we use for head stock isn't crooked. That way it's parallel to the fretboard. Once it's in places it is cut to shape, we thin it a bit and open the holes for the tuning machines. This one will use locking tuning machines. That's why the holes are bigger.

This fretboard is made of a national species of oak. It has some beautiful colours. This piece was made a long time ago, so the only thing I need to do was to glue it using the guide lines to keep it straight. Then, it's all a matter of glue and clamps to hold it in place.

The strum guard is nade if the same wood. The toughest part is to repeat the sound hole on the piece. Once we have done this, we can make a design we like to the rest and glue it.

The last step is to even out both fretboard and strum guard. For this, we use sandpaper and a lot of elbow grease.

### Completando el diapasón.

Para terminar con el diapasón, tenemos que colocar los pubtos armonicos y los trastes.

Los primeros son pintos de aluminio que marcan posiciones relevantes del diapasón. Van en los trates 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 y 15. Todos corresponden a las inversiones de los acordes que se pueden hacer.

Lo último son los trates. Los vamos colocando uno a uno. Al terminar de colocar todos, nos aseguramos de limar los extremos para remover cualquier borde filoso.

### Finishing the fretboard

To complete the freboard, we have put the position markers and frets in place.

The former are made of aluminum. These are placed on key position along the fretboard. They correspond to the inversions of the chords. They go on frets 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 and 15.

The last thing are the frets. We place them in the slots one at a time. Once we are done, we need to file the borders to remove any sharp edges produced by the cut of the fretwire.

### Redondear el mástil

Con los trastes en su lugar, podemos redondear el mástil. Seguimos el proceso de trazar las líneas para guiarnos durante el proceso. Luego, con la ayuda de una escorfina y papel de lijar removemos el material de los lados y rebajamos toda la pieza hasta lograr una curvatura que sea cómoda para sostener el instrumento.

### Rounding the neck

With frets in place, we can start to round the neck. We take it by steps. First, we draw the lines to guide the process. Then, we go ahead and use a rasp and sandpaper to make the whole back of the neck round until it's comfortable to hold in our hands.

Once this is done, we can let the project rest while we prepare for some more sanidng and sealing the grain.
