Lamentablemente, hubo algunos accidentes tras cámara donde se perdieron algunas maderas exóticas que tenía pensado utilizar para este proyecto. Esto sirve como lección para no preparar piezas para doblar a menos que lo vaya a hacer en ese momento.  Todavía se puede utilizarse algo, pero toda la idea estética del instrumento se perdió con estos materiales.

Sin embargo, eso no impedirá continuar con el proceso. Quedan unos aros de cedro y el fondo de mora amarilla. También prepararé un fondo de cedro solo para cumplir con esa parte del proceso.

Por el momento, vamos a rebajar estos aros para poder doblarlos y colocarlos con en la solera. Primero, los remojamos para darles más flexibilidad y evitar que se quemen al contacto con el doblador caliente. Una vez doblados, de hacen los cortes correspondientes para que todo calce y, finalmente, se pegan para seguir dándole forma al instrumento.

Con los aros en su lugar, podemos proceder a colocar todos los refuerzos internos. Primero colocamos los peones para fijar bien la tapa a los aros. Este debe ser el paso más sencillo y relajante de todo el proceso. Solo es cuestión de colocar pegamento en las piezas y presionarlas en su lugar a distancias relativamente iguales.

Mientas este pegamento se seca, preparamos los arillos. Esto cumple la misma función que los peones pero para el fondo de instrumento. Primero tenemos que rebajarlos un poco. Después, los remojamos. Luego, utilizamos el doblador para darles forma. Una vez tengan la forma adecuada, los medimos entre los aros para saber cuánto tenemos que cortar. Aquí aprovechamos de dejarlos fijos sobre los aros para que se sequen y mantengan su forma.

Una vez se hayan secado, podemos proceder a pegarlos en su lugar. En este momento utilizamos los tacones del cuatro para medir hasta que altura se colocarán estas. Esto con el fin de saber cuánto se tendrá que rebajar de los aros más tarde.

Los últimos refuerzos por colocar son listones de madera a lo ancho de los aros para reforzar puntos a lo largo de su curvatura. Estos los cortamos para que entren entre los peones y los arillos y los fijamos con cinta mientras se seca el pegamento.

Después de retirar el exceso superior de los aros y lijar un poco, tenemos un instrumento casi listo para cerrar. El fondo a utilizar en esta pieza está listo, pero en la próxima publicación, prepararé uno como si fuera para este instrumento.

There's some bad news to address first. Some exotic woods were lost during the bending process. This comes as a lesson not to prepare material to bend unless that's the need. Some of it is salvageable, but not for sides at least. So the aesthetic idea of this one is gone.

However, that won't stop the process. There were some cedar sides available and the back will still be osage orange. I'll be preparing a cedar back just to illustrate the process as that other piece I'm going to use is already done.

For now, let's focus is thinning this sides and bending them to place to keep the assembling going. First, we'll hydrated them to keep them flexible and prevent any burns from the hot bender. Once they are bent, we can measure and make the cuts needed to have them fit the shape. Last but not least, we can glue them to give the instrument it's characteristic shape.

With the sides on their place, we can adress the reinforcements. We start with the kerfing to fix the sides to the sound board. This has to be one of the simplest and most relaxing parts of the process. We only need to apply some glue to each piece and press it into place. Then, we rinse and prepare trying to keep equal separation from each other.

While the glue dries of the kerfing, we can prepare the side reinforcements. This does the same that the kerfing does for the sound board, except they go on the side for the back. First, we make them more flexibyby removing some layers of material from them. Then, we soak them in water to prevent burns. We use the bender again. Once they are in shape, we can place in the instrument to measure and cut. We can leave then there to dry and make sure they retain their shape.

Once they are dry, we proceed to glue them. On this process, we'll use the heel and end block to measure how high they will be. This is to mark what's the excess of the sides that will be removed afterwards.

The last reinforcements go on the sides to give their curvature some strength. We need to cut some strips of wood to place between the kerfing and the other reinforcements. We apply glue and keep them in place with some masking tape.

We remove th excess of the sides and sand the whole surface. Thus, we end up with an instrument which is ready to close up. On the next entry, illybe showing the process to prepare a back as if it was this instrument.
