**Zu aller erst ein paar Fakten zur Nullarbor:**
- Die Nullarbor Wüste bzw. Nullarbor Ebene liegt in den Bundesstaaten Western Australia und South Australia
- Der Begriff kommt aus dem Lateinischen und bedeutet "kein Baum"
- Durch die Nullarbor führt der Eyre Highway, er ist insgesamt 1675 km lang
- Zwischen Caigunga und Balladonia befindet sich mit 146,6 km die längste völlig gerade verlaufende Straße Australiens
- Aber wirklich kurvenreich ist die gesamte Strecke nicht, daher eine sehr ermüdende Fahrt
- Man schafft die Durchquerung meist in 3-4 Tagen
- Der Highway dient teilweise als Landebahn für Flugzeuge
- Es gibt mehr Möglichkeiten seinen Benzintank aufzufüllen wie seinen Trinkwasservorrat
- Benzin ist etwa doppelt so teuer wie an den üblichen Tankstellen
- Man grüßt die entgegenkommenden Fahrer
- Der Highway ist gesäumt von totgefahrenen Tieren
- Die Orte Balladonia, Caiguna, Cocklebiddy, Madura, Eucla, Border Village usw. sind eigentlich keine Städtchen, sondern nur eine Ansammlung von Tankstellen, Roadhouse, Motel und Campingplatz
- Man darf zwischen Western Australia und South Australia keine frischen Lebensmittel einführen (umgekehrt auch nicht)
- In der Nähe von Nundroo beginnt das längste Bauwerk der Welt. Der 5412 km lange Dingo Zaun
- Der Song "Highway to Hell" von AC/DC entstand im Tourbus auf dieser Strecke

**First of all, a few facts about the Nullarbor:**
- The Nullarbor Desert or Nullarbor Plain is located in the states of Western Australia and South Australia
- The term comes from Latin and means "no tree"
- Through the Nullarbor leads the Eyre Highway, it is a total of 1675 km long
- Between Caigunga and Balladonia is the longest straight road in Australia with 146.6 km
- But the entire route is not really a good one, so a very tiring ride
- The crossing is usually done in 3-4 days
- The highway partly serves as a runway for aircraft
- There are more ways to replenish your petrol tank like its drinking water
- Gasoline is about twice as expensive as at the usual petrol stations

*Wir haben die Nullarbor von West Richtung Ost durchquert. Unsere Nachfolgenden Überlebens-Tipps beziehen sich daher auf diesen Streckenverlauf:*

**1. Vorräte**
Überall steht, dass Norseman die letzte Möglichkeit ist, seine Vorräte aufzustocken. Wir empfehlen, dies bereits in Esperance zu tun. Dort gibt es die größeren (und günstigeren) Supermärkte und das billigere Benzin. Den Benzin-Tank in Esperance bis zum Anschlag auffüllen und in Norseman dann nochmal volltanken.

In Richtung Osten muss man an der Grenzkontrolle erst in Ceduna seine frischen Sachen abgeben, sprich man hat etwa 3 Tage Zeit das Zeug aufzubrauchen. In Ceduna gibt es einen großen Supermarkt, dort könnte man wieder aufstocken. Glaubt ja nicht, die Einöde hört ab Ceduna auf, South Australia ist nicht gerade dicht besiedelt, man muss schon bis Port Augusta durchhalten um wieder in der richtigen Zivilisation zu sein.

**2. Trinkwasser**
Soviel Trinkwasser wie nur möglich ins Auto packen. Geht man davon aus, dass man bis zu 3 Tage in der Nullarbor ist und jeder am Tag 3 Liter Wasser trinkt dann kommt man bei 2 Personen schon auf 18 Liter nur zum Trinken. Hinzu kommt kochen, evtl. etwas Körperhygiene und vielleicht noch etwas vorsorglich für den Motor (sollte er überhitzen).

**3. Handy-Empfang**
Sag ich gleich vorneweg: gibt es kaum! Mit Telstra hat man noch den besten Empfang. Wenn man von Weitem einen Sendemast sieht, weiß man schon "aha, in 30 km hab ich dann mal wieder Empfang". Naja, solange kein Notfall passiert ist es auch schön, einfach mal offline zu sein.

**4. Duschen**
In den Tankstellen und den Roadhouses kann man für 1 $ duschen, was ziemlich günstig ist wenn man mal bedenkt, dass Trinkwasser sehr knapp ist in der Nullarbor-Wüste. In Norseman gibt es an der Caltex eine kostenlose Dusche, wenn man die Nullarbor frisch geduscht und gut riechend starten möchte.

**5. Bargeld oder Kreditkarte?**
Beides! Man kann zwar fast überall mit Kreditkarte bezahlen, aber sollte mal ein Kartenlesegerät defekt sein wäre es sinnvoll, Bargeld dabei zu haben. Es ist nicht so, dass ein Lesegerät in einer Tankstelle kaputt geht und irgendjemand mal kurz in die nächste Stadt fährt und ein neues besorgt, denn diese nächste Stadt gibt es nicht, oder diesen jemand...

**6. Roadkill**
Das Fahren in der Dämmerung sollte man vermeiden damit man nicht selbst zum Känguru Killer wird. Die vielen Roadkills am Straßenrand kommen meistens von den großen Trucks (auch Road-Trains genannt), da diese gern bei Nacht fahren weil die Temperaturen angenehmer sind und die Strecke leerer ist (wobei wirklich viel Verkehr herrscht ohnehin nicht in der Nullarbor)

**7. Musik**
Okay ich sag es gleich vorneweg: die Fahrt wird super langweilig, spätestens am Dritten Tag kriegt man den vollen Koller! Deshalb sollte man für viel Musik im Auto sorgen. Wir haben unsere gesamte Playlist bestimmt 5 mal durchgehört.

*We have crossed the Nullarbor from west to east. Our following survival tips therefore refer to this course:*

**1. Stocks**
Everywhere it says Norseman is the last possibility to stock up on his supplies. We recommend doing this already in Esperance. There are the larger (and cheaper) supermarkets and the cheaper gasoline. Fill up the fuel tank in Esperance and then refuel in Norseman.

Towards the east you have to give away your fresh stuff at the border check-up in Ceduna, which means you have to use all your fish stuff in about 3 days. In Ceduna there is a large supermarket, where you could go shopping again. Do not think the desert is going to end in Ceduna, South Australia is not very densely populated, you have to go to Port Augusta to be back in the right civilization.

**2. Drinking water**
Fill up as much Drinking water as possible. If you assume that you will be in the Nullarbor for up to 3 days and you drink 3 Liters of Water per day, thats only 9 Liter per Person just for drinking. Not mentioned the water you need for cooking and so on.

**3. Mobile phone reception**
I say right in front: there is hardly! With Telstra you have the best reception. If you see a transmitting mast from far away, you already know you will have reception again in about 30km. Well, as long as no emergency happened it is also nice to be offline.

**4. Shower**
At the petrol stations and the roadhouses you can shower for 1 $, which is quite favorable when you consider that drinking water is very scarce in the Nullarbor desert. In Norseman there is a free shower on the Caltex, if you want to start the Nullarbor freshly showered.

**5. Cash or Credit Card?**
Both! You can pay almost everywhere with a credit card, but if a card reader is defective it would make sense to have cash money. It is not like that a reading device in a gas station is broken and somebody drives into the next city to pick up a new one, because there is no next city...

**6. Roadkill**
Driving in the twilight should be avoided so you do not become a kangaroo killer yourself. The many roadkills on the roadside mostly come from the big trucks (also called road-trains) because they like to drive at night because the temperatures are more comfortable and the road is empty (although there is not really a lot of traffic in the Nullarbor anyway)

**7. Music**
Okay I say it at the beginning: the ride becomes super boring, at the latest on the third day you get the full rage! This is why you should have plenty of music in the car. We have played our entire playlist 5 times.

Auch wenn die Fahrt durch die Nullarbor mit Gefahren und extremer Langweile verbunden ist, ist es dennoch eine Erfahrung auf die wir nicht verzichten möchten. Zum einen ist es interessant, wie sich die Landschaft und Vegetation in der Nullarbor -zwar sehr langsam- aber dennoch verändert. Von wüstenartiger Ödnis, bis zu eigenartigen trockenen Wäldern bis hin zu dramatischen Steilküsten direkt an der großen Australischen Bucht. Man kann majestätisch wirkende Adler bei ihrem Flug beobachten oder Raben die sich am Straßenbuffet (tote Kängurus) bedienen.

Even if the ride through the Nullarbor is associated with dangers and extreme boredom, it is still an experience we do not want to do without. On the one hand, it is interesting to see how the landscape and vegetation in the Nullarbor - although very slowly - but still changes. From desert-like desolation, to peculiar dry forests to dramatic cliffs just off the Great Australian Bay. You can observe majestic eagles on their flight or ravens who use the street buffet (dead kangaroos).

Zum anderen ist es auch eine interessante Erfahrung zu sehen, was die Nullarbor-Durchquerung mit einem selbst macht. Am ersten Tag ist man noch voller Abenteuerlust, freut sich auf endlose Straßen ohne Kurven und die Einsamkeit, man grüßt entgegenkommende Fahrzeuge. 
Am Zweiten Tag denkt man sich noch, dass alles ja gar nicht so schlimm ist wie alle sagen, dass die Nullarbor doch einfach zu schaffen ist. 
Und dann kommt der dritte Tag! Und wenn man am Steuer sitzt möchte man am liebsten schon nach 20 km alles hinschmeißen und Fahrertausch machen. Man hat keine Lust mehr, weiß nicht mehr wie man sitzen soll, der Fuß schläft einem ein, man bekommt schwitzige Hände, und diese Langeweile ist das Schlimmste. Endlich kommt man in Ceduna an, man gönnt sich eine Nacht im Caravanpark mit richtiger Dusche, Toilette und Küche.
Ab jetzt wird alles besser. Frisch geduscht und gestärkt mit einer vollen Kühl- und Vorratsbox geht es weiter. 

Aber was kommt nach Ceduna? 

Genau genommen gar nichts. Leider muss man sich bis Port Augusta noch etwa 500 km durchschlagen, dann erst hat man wieder etwas Zivilisation. Aber die Fahrt dahin bietet landschaftlich kaum etwas nennenswertes, alles ist trocken, hat dieselbe Farbe, wenn man eine Pause einlegt wird man fast aufgefressen von den Fliegen. Und auch Port Augusta ist nicht schön, man kann gut Lebensmittel einkaufen, günstig tanken und weiter geht's. 

Aber wir versprechen Euch: ab dann wird wirklich alles besser!

On the other hand, it is also an interesting experience to see what impact the Nullarbor crossing has on you. On the first day you are still full of adventure, looking forward to endless streets without bends and solitude, you greet coming vehicles.
On the second day you still think that everything is not as bad as all say that the Nullarbor is easy to cross.
And then comes the third day! And if you are sitting at the wheel, you would like to switch seats after 20 km. You do not want to drive anymore, do not know how to sit, the foot is asleep, you get sweaty hands, and this boredom is the worst. Finally you arrive in Ceduna, you can enjoy a night in the caravan park with the right shower, toilet and kitchen.
From now on everything will be better. Freshly showered and strengthened with a full cooling and storage box continues.

But what comes after Ceduna?

In fact nothing. Unfortunately you have to go to Port Augusta about 500 km, then you have again some civilization. But the ride there is hardly anything worth mentioning, everything is dry, has the same color, if you take a break you will almost be eaten by the flies. And also Port Augusta is not nice, you can go well grocery shopping, cheap refuel and continue. 

But we promise you: from then on everything will be better!
