<html> <h2><strong>The story of a Cornish farm house.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmV57ePxon4JPZ7WNUBg8UNK8pYgwvweZ7Kd4QDZMKdAVx/sal.jpg" alt="sal.jpg"/></p> <p></p> <p><strong>I have worked for many years in the building industry and one thing I have learnt is things never go quite to plan, New build is generally straight forward but I prefer to work on older buildings which always throw up a challenge. A few years back a friend purchased a 17th century farm, along with land and various out buildings including pig pens and stables, all of which he asked me to take on as a long term project. With a kid on the way he asked if I could concentrate on the main farm house with the view to get it usable for when baby arrived 6 months later, with some intrepidation I agreed. Little was I to know what would lay ahead, the original cottage had many minor additions over the years, some poorly built. The main focus for the rebuild was a large kitchen/family area, with small windows and low roof the plan was to fit a large patio door to let a bit more light flood in, "that shouldn't be a big job" said my friend, here's where it all started to wrong. </strong></p> <p><strong>The first job was to open up for said door, on doing so problems started to appear, it seems in their wisdom past builders had built directly on top of what we later found to be a stone wall where in the past horses would have been tied up. </strong></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmSYFmLeuzqZXu6cQ3RhPqRysExSFFNyk2XwcaerTJw5MT/hole.jpg" alt="hole.jpg"/></p> <p></p> <p><strong>The structure was unsound note the steel prop holding the wall up, to add to this the roof above was of poor construction and infested with rats, literally dozens of them dead and alive. The stench was unbelievable years of rats defecating in the roof space had soaked into the timbers. Time to call my friend in and break the bad news to him. After much discussion the decision was made to scrap most of the extension and start again.</strong></p> <h2><strong>So off with the roof!</strong></h2> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmRUwgfGBM8pg1KnJ46aWNc6zBtqEEPVqVfmFUozK5pbTg/roof.jpg" alt="roof.jpg"/></p> <h2><strong>And down with the offending wall.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmcKAdLA51D1gTQCtUUkUEPYaHgLahwt9owd4du8JLjgGn/wall.jpg" alt="wall.jpg"/></p> <h2><strong>Not much left here just a heap of rubble.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmZZJHK5G4PW92CvybfUcz8WNrGhAezMCEBVaxU4HBU1ZF/wall2.jpg" alt="wall2.jpg"/></p> <p><strong>It turned out the concrete floor was wafer thin in places so in for a penny in for a pound as the saying goes, a new one was laid with pipe work inside for under floor heating, this job was getting bigger by the day. With so much going on it made sense to get the layout working a bit better so I added a utility room to the back.</strong></p> <h2><strong>Extending the extension.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmaaLuxEyxkQ5uGts3nsHeWoXJ38GVvowmJLRK3JCTrStn/utility.jpg" alt="utility.jpg"/></p> <h2><strong>Now time to get the rest rebuilt starting with the front wall.</strong></h2> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmPtTdSZugu6Cz2uJBbhvP5wCmEB6FHEoXXkX9iEzMRPxi/out%20wall.jpg" alt="out wall.jpg"/></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmQDfqLZ2oNw5NjnE7SunJDuEqgW51zPvexEgviLFeBUX6/out%202.jpg" alt="out 2.jpg"/></p> <h2><strong>Under the watchful eyes of Mini.</strong></h2> <h2><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmeTHZcwBTDLH8PefYpcX1A7twnJZgGGXaf9S3fjFZjAcb/min%20.jpg" alt="min .jpg"/></h2> <p> </p> <h2><strong>A few days later working into the night together with a friend the roof goes on, terrible phone photo!</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmYVby1Em4jqJUNybNrxBGjVioQNmLQVNJobin554QdGKM/rooof.jpg" alt="rooof.jpg"/></p> <p><strong>Jump forward a couple of months and i'm getting close to finishing. Cottage style render done, windows and door fitted plus a new oak decking out side, inside is getting close, just a few trims to go. Just in time for the new baby to move in.</strong></p> <h2><strong>Extra brightness from a skylight window.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQma9DnumFzonNXviYSMtrEdPh5idDDVG8i5SNKQiUHLbiH/finish.jpg" alt="finish.jpg"/></p> <h2><strong>A frame roof.</strong></h2> <h2><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmdhDawM1dgTSp8jzz1EZRVjPztRhYi17dPhj6mi5xSCZs/a%20frame.jpg" alt="a frame.jpg"/></h2> <p></p> <h2><strong>And a Star Wars inspired kitchen.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmRyfPqZxacRA8KvU84BsyfpWmvGG2hftcrZAWiX4Wf8A6/kit.jpg" alt="kit.jpg"/></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmStDJdTBFbU8y4HdoyCVZu2jPuD5DgH6umHkFNtkmYDd3/kit%202.jpg" alt="kit 2.jpg"/></p> <p><strong>Nearly all done, a few finishing touches like handles for the cupboard being made at a local foundry but nothing to stop my friends from moving in as you can see they have. From start to finish the only saving grace was that the weather was perfect, unbelievable for the UK. This was by far one of my most challenging projects, if it could go wrong it did and plenty more to boot. All said and done if I knew what this job would throw at me in advance I probably would have given it a wide berth but all's well that ends well and the final result was worth all the headache's. I'll finish off with a panorama of the end product.</strong></p> <h2><strong>Country house.</strong></h2> <p></p> <p><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmeLDig8tR2eTRLZ2uDx1rtnzf9TZP5aT3JKqHHtphEfhy/s#l.jpg" alt="s#l.jpg"/></p> <p></p> <p><strong>Hope you enjoyed reading this, It certainly was a labour of love but all came good in the end. Please take some time to read my other posts and most of all, stay safe out there!</strong></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> </html>

My friend is a real Star Wars nut, he said can I make it look like skywalkers house, I reigned him in a little and that's where we got to, after all he may want to sell it some day so I didn't want to go too crazy but overall effect is pretty cool.

I could live there. Very nice. I love Cornwall. My ancestry heralds from there actually, back to the mid 1400's. We were there in 2018 for a while, stayed in Falmouth and toured around. I could move there I think. Felt nice. It's doubtful I'd be able to afford a house like this though.

I can't afford a house like this either I just build them, well I used to don't really do building work much these days except on and off with this property, my mate finds projects there all the time. Cornwall a stunning place we have lived in Newquay for about 25 years, we moved there from the south east of the UK. Main reason for the surf we both are keen surfers and used to be beach bums, I worked for a number of years in the surf industry manufacturing surfboards and skateboards, great job but no money in it. In more recent years we ran a company for the same friend but small electronics really didn't rock our boat which is how we ended up here in the Philippines.

Seems like you've done a few things, and had some fun along the way. I've not been to the Philippines but it seems like your journey lead you there and you're making the most of it. Better weather than Cornwall at least! Will you go back to the UK to live at any stage?
