<div class="text-justify">How many times have we tried to get rid of a fly in our home and it is an almost impossible task, in fact, over the years, tools or devices have been created to kill them more effectively! and of course, by general culture we know that these insects have a very complex vision, some insects even work in an "HD" system so to speak! Today in my experiment we are going to deepen why these animals have such prodigious vision, join me in this experience!🧠🔬

<div class=pull-left>For this experiment I will use a specimen of the domestic species: (Musca domestica), they are cosmopolitan and almost inhabit the entire earth, in my country they are common from spring to winter due to the climate of Portugal, this dipterous flying insect is characteristic for presenting two wings and its body is divided into three parts: "head, thorax and abdomen", its body is covered by hairs that are not microscopic and that have an important role as a sensory structure, this means that with the body hairs called: (Sensilias ) flies feel, smell and taste!🔬🧫

<div class=pull-left>In this photo there are two interesting things to highlight, first the aforementioned hairs, which are sensory structures, then also how I apply light to the body of the fly, does it give to see how it has the glowing impression? green with orange and yellow? This is common in arthropods since chitin among other compounds reflects the sun's rays to avoid loss of "water" and the animal die of dehydration! something a bit like bird feathers. They do not properly have a mouth, instead they are called: "mouthparts that are used both for: (sucking, piercing in species that are hematophagous or can be used for licking). This fly vomits "gastric juice" in the food after a external digestion sucks food.🌏🕵️‍♂️

<div class=pull-left>I really liked this scientific article by Mendez, 2011 where they describe the biology of the domestic fly, and as you can see, the eye of a fly is called the compound eye, and within the compound eye we get microstructures called: (ommatidia), however the Flies also have "ocelli" that are three and that are very primitive and rudimentary, they cannot focus and their function is to capture more external light changes, with them "they can activate and deactivate the animal's biological mechanisms" (Jordan, 2013).🕵️‍♂️🪰

<div class=pull-left>As I mentioned, the compound eye has hundreds of ommatidia, I was not able to count them all because it is difficult, but there is scientific work that determined that a domestic fly has about 4000, they are hexagonal in shape and have the property of capturing images in: "slow motion" for So to speak, it also gives them the ability to react to predators, they have a 360 degree field of vision which makes them almost impossible to catch! within the ommatidium there is a cell called: (pigmentary) are specialized cells!🔬🧠

<div class=pull-left>I liked the photograph that I took at about 120x magnification because the pigment cells are clearly seen, the ommatidia are nothing more than sensory structures formed by light-receiving cells, with them the fly can determine the presence or lack of light in the environment, and They are even able to distinguish between shades of colors. Although the insect with the best vision could be the dragonfly because it is a hunter, the fly still has extraordinary vision!🧠🕵️‍♂️🪰

<div class=pull-left>The ommatidia allow the fly to create in its "brain" images with shapes and colors, the way the ommatidium works is as follows: "an optical part collects the information as "light", then another part called: "rhabdomerus" transforms light into electrical stimulation, and thus images are created!🔬🪰

Dunno what kind of eyes mosquitoes have, but I found that if I approach them with my hand slowly, they don't react, as if I'm invisible to them, but if I make sudden motions, they react immediately. Approaching them till my hand is very close and then going in for the kill works far better than swift motions!

I understand that flies have 3 ocelli that help to capture changes in light, that's why it helps them escape faster, I don't know about mosquitoes but I'll make a post about them to see how advanced their eyes are.
