But seriously, neither Lighting network nor Segwit does not solve the problem of scaling - you are absolutely right. 
They're crutches... like support, but clumsy and with strong movements (volumes in this case) can buckle.

Actually I am in contact with some of the LN devs and according to them-the smaller capacity was done for security reasons. For one, people won't say hey I lost $200 on the LN. And two, routing is getting better but more people need to run LN nodes can connect them to LN channels. 
From what I heard the Ln devs will open up and lets nodes choose how big of Tx they want to accept during this time watch towers will also launch giving more security for larger Txs..

Ill have to read up on this some more is there any type of benefit to me running a LN node to help out the network? Like most masternode/pos coins do now.

Yep their is a benefit to running a node however in order to get paid you have to open LN channels so LN nodes are kinda like the bitcoin version of master nodes . You get paid when someone uses the LN but does not want to open a LN channel so they pay a fee to you to process using your LN channel. LN channels need to be opened when you pay an onchain fees so that the money you need to invest. Here how much you can earn:

https://satoshis.place/ probably inflated the earnings but you get the idea. So to earn open LN channels with popular LN services you still might not earn much but you will help the LN. As you see Onchain is not gone but used less. The idea is to inc block size/segwit power (Schoor or BLS signatures they both inc segwit capacity without block inc) in the future-block size inc to 2-4 mb once LN is out for mass use
