 **My girlfriend was canoeing with the kids behind her house and found a colony of these living in the lake. I have lived in the community for over 30 years and I've never seen anything like these outside of an aquarium setting. After we showed a neighbor the photos, he and I agreed that Fish and Wildlife should be informed, just to ensure they are not hazardous to the lake's current ecosystem. They do seem rather invasive...**  **They behave very similar to Coral.**  **I'll say what we're all thinking...**  **ALIEN BRAINS!**  **According to my brief research, these are called Bryozoa moss animals, invertebrates that inhabit various aquatic ecosystems. They are small animals that form large colonies by asexual budding. Colonies can reach the size of several tens of centimeters, while individual units within a colony are the size of a few millimeters. Each individual within a colony works as a separate zooid and is genetically identical to each other individual within the same colony. Most freshwater species of bryozoans belong to the Phylactolaemata class. Since our lakes are classified as freshwater cedar, I assume this is the species that has elected to habitate here. There is a massive amount of these colonies submerged in the lake, and for an aquatic creature I've never seen in my years living here, it is a little disconcerting to say the least. However, based on what I have read, it appears these creatures are not harmful towards humans.**   **The sporadic and volatile weather patterns as of lately in this area, the exponentially increasing number of tropical storms and hurricanes developing in the Atlantic ocean, coupled with the strange behaviors I've witnessed of local insects and other wildlife, hard to point the finger at anything but ourselves as the cause of these irregularities.
