Tim Berners-Lee wants to decentralise data and networks on the web like it was in the beginning. The vision of the internet in the early days was for a distributed web and it did not account for the centralised corporate giants we have today, he argues they have an unfair advantage over the consumer because they have control over our data.

## Solid Vs IPFS

Tim is working on a project at MIT labs, called [Solid](https://solid.mit.edu/), which stands for 'social linked data', It distributes your data in pods which can give permission to different apps across a network, this means you hold your data not them, he also states that blockchain technology will play a big part. 

It differs slightly from [IPFS](https://ipfs.io/), which is totally decentralised because it does not rely on pointing to a centralised server, but Solid will still keep your stuff away from the big sharks like google and facebook.

Solid could see the web getting smarter as apps are able to pool data from users who let their information be shared, this could help track all sorts of statistics and would be helpful in emergency situations.

## Maidsafe

The [maidsafe](http://maidsafe.net/) project is working towards the same aims of sending small packets of data far and wide across the web, other decentralised blockchain storage platforms are also emerging. Depending on how user friendly and economical these new services are we could see the web and our data back in our hands sooner than we think.
