I argued forever with Steemit  guys forever to put more focus on the user interface, so I don't disagree with it's importance. But I also argued with them forever that they couldn't operate with a blockchain where their cost to support the basic infrastructure was $90K/month and was going to increase with more users. For practical reasons (available funds), the cost and scalability had to be addressed first.

Beyond that, we also do need to focus on 2nd layer work as well as the existing user experience for the social site. Fortunately, there's no reason we have to limit ourselves to one thing, and the work we're doing on second layer tech can actually yield practical benefits for the social experience (hivemind, the primary software that powers the Hive-based social media sites and has a big impact on the user interface is itself a 2nd layer app).

I'm a front end dev specialising in CSS and have offered to make the hive.blog front-end look awesome and get it away from this 2002 look it has now. I 100% agree that new people coming in are going to be put off by the design and user interface.

I'm happy to contribute to the CSS work to get things looking awesome but unfortunately I've not worked with git much so would need showing around so I can begin making changes...

I'm probably not the best to give git advice, but there should be plenty of git-savvy people on Hive devs discord, at least, if you want to use discord. I'd also suggest joining the Mattermost for Hive development, that's where most of the programmers work, because it's relatively focused on development discussions and it maintains a permanent history. You can contact @guiltyparties for details, he is the maintainer for it.

Yeah those are solid points and I agree with your balanced opinion. The fundamentals such as cost and second layer are certainly vital to the health of the platform, and need to be constantly improved. The issue then is that they aren't at all sexy to the average user (who likely don't even understand it.)

The product users care about and interact with is how the content arrives before their eyes and how they are able to connect with other users... and THAT.. has improved little. So the moves to try drive traffic to Hive, even in a time when there's a golden opportunity, won't attract or retain many users because a fragmented experience is not something people see as a superior alternative.

2021 could be a good year!
This chain has great potential.
