Finally got some time to tinker around my system. I've already wrote about my wish to record music on an open-source OS. I went through several phases. Here are the previous posts.
https://steemit.com/music/@bonvivan/doing-music-in-an-open-source-environment
https://steemit.com/music/@bonvivan/my-open-source-studio-almost-functional-quick-jam
https://steemit.com/music/@bonvivan/my-open-source-home-studio-losing-my-religion

The End of the Beginning - The Capitulation

I really love Linux. I love the freedom I feel when I'm using it. I love it because it's clean, tidy, bloatware-free and customizable. No one is secretly collecting your private data, no one is spying on you. And the whole eco-system is not profit-driven. I admire those unsung heroes writing software for us to use and receiving very little, or nothing, at least in financial terms. I feel grateful.
Now, Windows is completely different beast. Their tendency for monopolization and pushing everyone else out of the market is incredible, although completely normal for a capitalist mean machine. This is what I experienced at the very beginning of my setup.

My Gear.

The moment Windows got me was when I just wanted to jam a little bit on my Linux studio and couldn't. I realized I don't want to be a hacker to run a studio, I just want to do music. And bam. That was the transition. I was already on the other side. So I decided I would dual boot Linux and Windows. I will record on Windows, and do all the other stuff I usually do on Manjaro Linux.

Windows No Likey Dual Boot

First, I wanted to stick with Win7. I use it on my wife's computer, so I'm more or less familiar. After a couple of failed installations (my laptop doesn't have USB drivers for the Win7 installation to proceed), I weighed my options. So, Win7 is a no-go, Win8 apparently not very good, that's why they made 8.1, while Windows 10 is the absolute king of assholes. I read a lot about it. Bastard has mandatory updates now. But that's not the issue here. The issue is, that everytime you boot Windows, it messes with your bootloader for Linux. If you manage to fix it, you can be OK for a while, but then an update comes. Oh no! What happens? It fucks it up all over again. And not only that. The asshole might delete (!) your whole Linux partition, since it can't read it. Say what?! Yep. There's a lot of people on forums complaining about this. It is unbelievable, they are actively trying to make you have only on OS, and that's theirs. A thousand asshole-carmic points for Microsoft.

But, There is a But

So, if I wanted to dual-boot, Windows 10 was out of the question. So that left me with Windows 8.1.
Fortunately, the installation went well. The thing was, I had to download all of the drivers by myself, which was a pain in the ass. Actually, you need the wi-fi card drivers first, and then Windows can download the rest when you connect to the internet. And yeah, the touchpad also wasn't working. I spent two days looking for the drivers to no avail. Then my friend came by and miraculously solved the problem, don't ask. That was it. I finally had an OS I could normally record on. Then came Majaro Linux. I booted it from an USB and everything worked out-of-the-box. The touchpad, wifi, sound. How probable is that, right? Anyways, I managed to set up a dual boot system. And everything works. I downloaded Reaper for recording, plugged in my new soundcard and everything works perfect for now. I can't say how much relief I feel right now. This was really important, since I'm planning to record a solo EP before autumn and the release of our band album.

Workflow in Reaper.

I've tested it out a bit today. I recorded a very well-known Croatian children's song, a nursery rhyme. Added some back-vocals, whistling and MIDI. Although MIDI is crackling a bit, I'm still not sure what is the cause. But it can't be that bad. Anyway, here's a little test song. Enjoy.

************************************************************

http://seine.bandcamp.com/

Love the song and it's theme. The negotiation between the parents and a giant crocodile about the ransom and release of their abducted child. A beautiful and informative children song about handling crisis situations <3

Thank you Dimitrij, it would have felt like an overkill had I delved into the song's subject. But this is why we got Jungen like you. Welcome to Steemit! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5A2Vf-SkFs

I've done some recording on Linux with Ardour and Audacity. It can be a pain to get it set up, but there's some cool tools. I've not done much on other platforms, so I can't really compare. I have Win10 on this PC as my son wanted it, but it's not caused any issues as yet. I just had to re-install Linux after Windows as it's too hard to do it the other was around. I could really do with a new interface some time. Something else to buy with my Steem

Yep, I got a friend who puts a different Linux distro every couple of months. I guess he just loves novelty. It really is nice, it feels like you got a new computer every time. I didn't even bother with Win10 after reading all those comments. It just feels like giving consent to their subtle violence.
