Being visually impaired: Final follow-up!: Answering your questions - What would you ask a visually impaired person?

A short intro for new readers: I am a 24 year old woman and I became visually impaired between the age of 10 and 14. Due to my eye-condition (Stargardt’s Disease) I have lost my central vision to the point the doctors told me I had a vision of 5% left. Life is full of challenges but I try to keep a positive attitude. I like to share my thoughts, ideas and experiences with you so I asked Steemers what would be interesting to tell you about from my perspective. Below are some of the questions that were asked.

Do ‘ugly’ boys/men hit on me more in hope I would not notice?
Haha no. Because at first sight you can’t tell that I am visually impaired. It is usually after I am in a conversation with someone that the visual impairment comes up (but not even always). I am also not a person that tries to hide it in case it is a turnoff for the person I talk to. And by that I mean that I don’t feel that my impairment is a reason for others not to be with me, it should not matter and if people think that my impairment is too much to handle (like, too much work) then it says more about them than it does about me.

I must say that I have a very handsome boyfriend for over 5.5 years now and he always jokes that if they ever find a cure for my eye-condition, I could only use it after we are married and have kids so it would be harder (impossible) for me to get rid of him after I see him with a normal vision haha.

Do I cook for myself?
Yes, I cook for myself. I like to cook, I also like to experiment with stuff but mostly when I eat alone (just in case it is a total disaster). In certain lighting I cannot always see if my meat is cooked all the way through but if I cook for others I will just asked them and otherwise I let in cook a bit longer just in case. (It sometimes turns out a bit dry but I don’t mind). Cooking is not that big of a problem to me. I usually just do something and it often turns out fine haha. Of course chopping an union while looking at it with a distance of 10 centimeters is not very nice but I will survive haha. (I sometimes wear swimming goggles to keep my make-up in place but these are not very comfortable while chopping an onion).

Some interesting stories about mistakes I have made due to my impairment?*
I can probably write a very long post about this question but I will make it short haha. In one of my previous follow-ups I mentioned that I once biked right onto a trashcan in the middle of a square and that I could literally not walk the next day. Well, that is one of the mistakes I’ve made. I also nudged a cup of hot tea over my arm and leg which led to second degree burns. That happened because I accidentally nudged over a speaker because of my clumsiness and I did not see/realize that it was attached to the second speaker so that one also fell down, unfortunately my cup of tea was right in the middle and it got tackled by the wire that was attached the two speakers.. yes, very handy of me. At last, I sometimes use the wrong oven settings (thinking that I am using the right one) because I looked at the settings but I guess I didn’t look very well haha. So occasionally I accidentally grill my pizza instead of cooking it the right way.

What are the most important (to me) new physical skills I have learned to cope with the impairment?
I have no idea. I am a pole dancer which makes me very strong and flexible. And I think that that enables me to sit in certain uncomfortable positions for a longer periods of time. I mean, when I am reading or when I am at school I have to lean forward a lot to be able to read the books or assignments. Having a fit (strong) body contributes to that I think, because of a certain stamina that I have (and willpower). But I can’t think of any physical skills I’ve developed directly due to my impairment.

Am I used to my condition after being visually impaired for 10 years?
Yes, overall I am used to it but there are times that I have to learn to adjust again. For example, every time it gets autumn again, it also gets darker earlier in the evening. I use my bicycle a lot and every time it gets darker I forgot how bad my vision is and I always think to myself.. did my vision get worse?! And then I realize that these thoughts reoccur every year and that I just need to get used to the early darkness again haha. The psychological part of being visually impaired is something that I am not sure I will ever get used to. Of course I am a lot further in the process than I was 10 years ago but life will not always be the same and therefore I will have to get used to new things as well.

This was the final follow-up of the questions you have asked me. I enjoyed answering them and I hope you liked reading it. I hope I could give you a better insight in how a visually impaired girl/women thinks and acts. I cannot always speak for everyone, only on behalf of myself. Like I always say, if you have any further questions than feel free to ask me anything :)

Awareness if what makes me most curious. Some chick asked on another post of yours whether you sleep. That question got me thinking about how you can tell when you are in a dream. How your dreams are like. Sometimes I will know that I am in a dream if something visual seems out of place, but for someone who doesn't have the visual I'm sure it would be a different experience.
