After the visit to the [marriage museum](https://hive.blog/photography/@bossel/ninghai-a-marriage-museum-ein-ehemuseum) we were taken to a very nice natural 'scenic area', called Zhejiang East Grand Canyon (浙东大峡谷, zhè dōng dà xiágǔ). In China you can't really trust it, when they call a tourist spot natural, because much of it (eg. around the West Lake in Hangzhou) is actually manmade. In this case, though, with the exception of the trails & bridges (& the occasional pavilion) it really was nature. | Nach dem Besuch im [Ehemuseum](https://hive.blog/photography/@bossel/ninghai-a-marriage-museum-ein-ehemuseum) brachte man uns zu einem natürlichen "malerischen Gebiet" namens Ost-Zhejiang Grand Canyon (浙东大峡谷, zhè dōng dà xiágǔ). Diese 'malerischen Gebiete' sind in China nur allzuoft nicht sonderlich natürlich, auch wenn das behauptet wird (wie z.B. in der Gegend um den Westsee in Hangzhou). In diesem Fall kann man aber durchaus mit Ausnahme der Pfade & Brücken (& dem gelegentlichen Pavillon) von Natur reden.

The "Grand Canyon" is located in the south of the Ningbo Tianhe Ecology Scenic Area, [in the Tianhe Park](https://www.google.de/maps/place/Tianhe+Park/@29.1913557,121.254375,16z/data=!4m8!1m2!2m1!1sninghai+resort!3m4!1s0x0:0xfae1cbdcd3483f26!8m2!3d29.1922831!4d121.2566105) (or it actually is the Tianhe Park, not quite sure about that). If you go there on your own, you can take a bus from the [Ningbo South Bus Station](https://www.chinabusguide.com/station/ningbo-south.html). Since the Polytechnic provided all transport, we didn't have that problem. | Der "Grand Canyon" befindet sich im Süden der "ökologisch malerischen Landschaft Ningbo Tianhe", im [Tianhe-Park](https://www.google.de/maps/place/Tianhe+Park/@29.1913557,121.254375,16z/data=!4m8!1m2!2m1!1sninghai+resort!3m4!1s0x0:0xfae1cbdcd3483f26!8m2!3d29.1922831!4d121.2566105) (oder es handelt sich um den Park, bin mir nicht sicher). Wer auf eigene Faust hin will, kann den Bus am [Busbahnhof Ningbo Süd](https://www.chinabusguide.com/station/ningbo-south.html) nehmen. Wir brauchten das nicht, da das Polytechnikum sich um den Transport kümmerte.

On the way into the canyon, we already encountered the first interesting wildlife. Beside the road & particularly in the storm sewer there were a number of black salamanders. Couldn't find out which species they were. The closest match is the [Chinese fire belly newt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_fire_belly_newt), but the ridge on the back & the orange shoulder dots don't really fit. | Auf dem Weg zum Tal wurde es schon interessant. Neben der Straße, v.a. im Straßenablauf gab es eine Anzahl schwarzer Salamander. Konnte leider nicht herausfinden, um welche Art es sich handelt. Am ehesten vielleicht um den [Chinesischen Feuerbauchmolch](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinesischer_Feuerbauchmolch), aber so ganz paßt die Beschreibung nicht.

As is my luck when I actually travel for sightseeing, the weather was miserable. Well, not that miserable, at least it didn't rain. But the mist didn't make it easy to get good pictures. | Wie üblich, wenn ich mal touristisch unterwegs bin, war das Wetter mies. Nicht sehr, wenigstens regnete es nicht. Aber der Nebel machte das Fotografieren nicht einfacher.

Still a quite impressive landscape. To get to the gorge we wanted to see, we had to get past a water reservoir first. Below is one (the biggest) of several suspension bridges in the area. | Aber doch eine interessante Landschaft. Um zur Schlucht zu kommen, die wir uns ansehen wollten, mußten wir an einem Stausee vorbei. Unten sieht man eine (die größte) der Hängebrücken in der Gegend.

Off to a quite rocky start. The beginning of the gorge is below. Should be perfect for @shasta's #bouldersunday, but I can't wait till Sunday. Don't get much done recently & want to move forward. | Steinig, steinig. Unten sieht man den Anfang der Schlucht. Eigentlich ideal für @shasta's bouldersunday, aber auf Sonntag kann ich nicht warten, da ich in letzter Zeit sowieso kaum was geschafft kriege.

The next picture shows pretty much how the whole trail goes. It also shows that you shouldn't go there during a Chinese holiday. This was a Saturday & not the best weather. Yet, as you can see, you will have a hard time to enjoy a quiet moment in nature there. | Auf dem nächsten Bild kriegt man einen recht guten Eindruck des Pfades. Zeigt auch, daß man besser nicht während chinesischer Ferien oder Feiertage hingeht. Es war Samstag & nicht das beste Wetter. Trotzdem war es fast unmöglich, das Ganze mal in Ruhe zu genießen.

I tried to stay as far away from any group as possible, so I had some time to actually look around & take photos. What you see everywhere in the area is this: | Tat mein Bestes, den Gruppen aus dem Weg zu gehen, so daß ich mich in Ruhe umsehen & Fotos machen konnte. Was man dabei fast überall dort findet:

Giant millipedes, probably [spirobolus walkeri](http://portugal.inaturalist.org/taxa/544806-Spirobolus-walkeri). Most of them were yellow striped, rarely reddish. | Riesentausendfüßer, vermutlich [Spirobolus walkeri](http://portugal.inaturalist.org/taxa/544806-Spirobolus-walkeri). Die meisten waren gelbgestreift, seltener rötlich.

Giants they were. Well, some. They were everywhere & came in all sizes, as you can see below. Some were around 20 cm long. They liked the wooden planks of the walkways in particular, probably on the hunt for dead plant material. You had to be careful not to step on them. | & es waren Riesen. Nunja, einige. Sie waren überall & in allen Größen, wie man unten sieht. Einige waren um die 20 cm lang. Sie krochen v.a. über die Bretter der Pfade, wahrscheinlich auf der Suche nach abgestorbenem Pflanzenmaterial. Man mußte aufpassen, wenn man nicht auf sie treten wollte.

I see this kind of snail shell a lot in Patras. But here, I have never seen a snail, just empty shells. | Sehe diese Art Schneckenhäuser häufig in Patras. Aber immer nur die Häuser, ohne Schnecken.

Then I came to the nice little waterfall from the title photo. In that spot, I was largely alone for a while because most of the Chinese tourists stayed on the trails & moved through the gorge rather quickly. Typical Chinese tourism. | Dann kam ich an den kleinen Wasserfall vom Titelbild. Dort, unten am Wasser, war ich recht alleine, da die meisten chinesischen Touristen auf den Wegen blieben & relativ schnell durch die Schlucht liefen. Typisch chinesischer Tourismus.

This could be a mayfly nymph, although the ones I know are a bit more slender. | Könnte eine Eintagsfliegenlarve sein, obwohl ich die etwas schlanker kenne.

A lonely fish. Don't know the species, but you find them all over South China. | Ein einsamer Fisch. Derartige Fische findet man in ganz Südchina.

Time to move on. This is one of the spots Chinese tourists like very much. You'll find numerous pictures online with the rock & the pavilion. | Weiter ging's. Dies ist einer der bei chinesischen Touristen beliebten Orte. Man findet zahllose Bilder online von diesem Felsen mit dem Pavillon.

Oh, well, why not... Anyway, the "Grand Canyon" is definitely worth a trip, if you're in Ningbo. If possible, you should go there on a normal work day & when the weather is good. | Naja, warum nicht... Egal, der "Grand CanyonW ist jedenfalls eine Reise wert, falls man mal in Ningbo ist. Wenn möglich sollte man aber an einem Arbeitstag & bei gutem Wetter hingehen.
