Shaoguan - A study in motorcycle usage / Eine Zweiradstudie
A few days before I had to leave Shaoguan, I finally took the time to study the use of motorised bicycles in China. Everyone who knows me also knows that I did this of course only because of my scientific-minded character, & absolutely not because I wanted to take pics of some cute scooter babes. All pictures here have been taken at the crossroads of [Huimin Lu & Gongye Donglu](https://www.google.de/maps/place/Shaoguan,+Guangdong,+China/@24.8007814,113.5901774,19.25z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x341c47bc59298b8b:0x5b9e4d76c4565ee4!8m2!3d24.810879!4d113.59762) near the centre of Shaoguan. | Einige Tage bevor ich Shaoguan verlassen mußte, nahm ich mir endlich die Zeit, den Gebrauch motorisierter Zweiräder in China zu studieren. Jeder, der mich kennt, weiß natürlich, daß ich dies nur wegen meines wissenschaftlich gesonnenen Charakters tat, & ganz & gar nicht wegen irgendeines Interesses an Bildern von hübschen Rollerbabes. Above we can see the typical *Happy Quadruplet*. This is very common in China to maximise the efficiency of motorcycles. In this case it involves a motorcycle taxi, which is less common. Taxis prefer to have only one paying passenger, but in places like Shaoguan this is negotiable. Note the fact that the driver wears a helmet, as is stipulated by law. Also note that there is no way to fasten the helmet.  | Oben sieht man den typischen *Fröhlichen Vierling*. Diesen sieht man in China sehr häufig, um die Effizienz von Motorrädern zu erhöhen. In diesem Fall handelt es sich um ein Motorradtaxi, was weniger gewöhnlich ist. Taxis bevorzugen einen einzigen zahlenden Passagier, aber in Orten wie Shaoguan ist das verhandelbar. Man beachte, daß der Fahrer wie gesetzlich vorgeschrieben einen Helm trägt. Man beachte auch, daß der Helm keinen Kinnriemen hat.

Here we have another taxi. The taxi rider is one of those strange exceptions who actually fasten their helmet. Another exception is the female passenger who really wears the helmet legally provided by the taxi. More common is the fact that she sits in sidesaddle. Female Chinese have perfected this position in a way that they don't need to hold on to anything. | Hier sehen wir ein weiteres Taxi. Der Fahrer ist eines der seltsamen Exemplare, die ihren Helm tatsächlich festzurren. Auch seltsam ist hier, daß der weibliche Fahrgast tatsächlich den vom Taxi zur Verfügung gestellten Helm trägt. Sehr normal hingegen ist der Damensitz. Chinesinnen haben diese Position so perfektioniert, daß ein Festhalten völlig unnötig ist.

In this image, we see 2 very typical types of behaviour. To the right is a woman on a scooter, wearing no helmet & talking on the phone. (Admittedly, a helmet would interfere with using the phone.) In the middle, we have a whole family on one scooter. Note the fact that the parents wear helmets (although one unfastened), while the child doesn't. Chinese parents are often so considerate of their children. They don't want to bother them with totally unnecessary safety measures. | Dieses Bild zeigt gleich 2 typische Verhaltensweisen. Die Frau rechts bentutzt einen Motorroller, ohne einen Helm zu tragen, während sie gleichzeitig telefoniert.(Zugegebenermaßen würde ein Helm beim Telefonieren stören.) In der Mitte haben wir eine ganze Familie auf einem Motorroller. Man beachte, daß die Eltern Helme tragen (wenn auch einen ohne Befestigung), während das Kind keinen hat. Chinesische Eltern sind oft so rücksichtsvoll. Sie wollen ihre Kinder nicht mit völlig überflüssigen Sicherheitsmaßnahmen belasten.

Finally we see the proper helmet usage by taxi passengers, called the *Hovering Helmet*. That's how you do it in China. The helmet is held in place a few centimetres above the head. This way, in case of an accident, the helmet can be quickly thrown out of the way, so you can use your head as crumple zone. Also note the perfect side saddle. | Hier sehen wir endlich die richtige Art der Helmnutzung für Passagiere, den *Schwebehelm*. So macht man das in China. Der Helm wird wenige Zentimeter über den Kopf gehalten. So kann man ihn im Falle eines Unfalles schnell wegwerfen, um den Kopf als Knautschzone zu nutzen. Man beachte auch den perfekten Damensitz.

This photo shows on the right another common way of wearing the helmet. Here, the helmet is even less likely to interfere in case of an accident. But there is a (very) slight chance that traffic police might take offence. The side saddle is very well executed, though. | Dieses Foto zeigt rechts eine weitere häufige Art, den Helm zu tragen. So ist der Helm bei einem Unfall mit Sicherheit nicht im Weg. Dafür gibt es eine (sehr) geringe Wahrscheinlichkeit, daß ein Verkehrspolizist Anstoß daran nimmt. Der Damensitz ist jedoch sehr gut implementiert.

Here too the helmet is carried in the passenger's lap. The side saddle is too much aligned with the motorcycle. But this is justified if the traffic is dense. | Auch hier wird der Helm im Schoß der Passagierin getragen. Der Damensitz ist etwas zu stark nach vorne orientiert. Dies ist jedoch in Ordnung, wenn der Verkehr sehr dicht ist.

Here the helmet is irresponsibly fastened to the head. But putting her shopping items where her feet should be is the proper Chinese way. | Diese Fahrerin hat ihren Helm unverantwortlicherweise festgezurrt. Die Positionierung ihres Einkaufs, wo eigentlich ihre Füße hingehören, zeigt jedoch eine ordentliche chinesische Einstellung.

This image shows the intermediate form of wearing a helmet. Instead of holding it over the head or keeping it in the lap, it is held beside the head. There is not clear advantage to this position, but it probably looks cool. The fact that she is sitting in a rather loose side saddle position, hints at her being aware of coolness. | Dieses Bild zeigt eine Zwischenform des Helmtragens. Anstatt ihn über den Kopf zu halten oder im Schoß zu tragen, wird er neben den Kopf gehalten. Diese Position hat keinen entscheidenden Vorteil, aber erscheint vermutlich cool. Die Tatsache, daß sie auch einen recht lockeren Damensitz bevorzugt, deutet darauf hin, daß Coolness für sie wichtig ist.

The *Lucky Triplet*. Grandma in the back, mother in the middle, son in front. The child without a helmet is strategically positioned so that in case of an accident he serves as a kind of airbag. That's the function of children in Chinese society: to provide security for their parents. | Das *Glückliche Trio*. Oma sitzt hinten, Mutter in der Mitte, Sohn vorne. Das Kind ohne Helm ist strategisch so positioniert, daß es im Falle eines Unfalles als eine Art Airbag fungiert. Dies ist die Funktion von Kindern in der chinesischen Gesellschaft: Absicherung der Eltern.

I have never seen anyone ride sidesaddle on a scooter or motorcycle before, holy wow!  That blows my mind.
Years ago I had an electric scooter (it wasn't a street legal scooter, it topped out at 11 mph) as my transportation and I loved it.  One time I did a bunch of shopping with it and had what would fit in the tiny trunk, but otherwise my cloth bags were strung from the handles and held in between my feet on the platform.  The lady at the bookstore (which was my last stop) saw me carrying all my bags and asked why I didn't leave them in my car - I explained that I had no car, I was on a scooter.  Her face when she was exclaiming aloud wondering how I could balance all that on a scooter was pretty priceless. XD  You do what you gotta do when you are not a car driver.  I imagine in China it's probably much safer to be a scooter and motorcycle driver as so many people do it, whereas here cars will plow you over like you don't exist.

The most interesting thing about riding sidesaddle is the fact that they don't need to hold on to anything. Whenever I used a motorcycle taxi I had to hold on for dear life.

& it's actually far unsafer to use motorcycles et al. in China. Chinese traffic in general is a mess, but for two-wheelers, it's particularly bad:
