I should be on the road right now... The plan was to leave work a little early today and head down to Ohio to watch my niece play basketball this weekend. Unfortunately, mother nature has other plans. Even at the beginning of the week, @mrsbozz and I knew we were staring down the barrel of the most significant snow event we have seen in some time.
The hope was that the predictions were exaggerated and as we got closer to the weekend things might shape up a little differently. The fact that I am writing this should tell you that isn't the case. Following on the heels of a couple inch snowfall earlier in the week, we are now expected to get between 12 and 18 inches of snow by all is said and done.
The fact that it is doing absolutely nothing right now is a bit misleading. It's also a bit of a slap in the face. Making us wonder if our caution and prudence was misguided. My only hope is that we get a monster of a storm so that our decision to stay home is not unfounded.
We are clearly heart broken that we aren't able to go down and watch our niece play basketball again, but being alive and well ensures that we can probably watch her play again someday down the road.
All that being said, I will likely be cozied up on the couch this weekend watching sports from that vantage point. Wildcard weekend starts in the NFL, my nieces games will be streaming tonight and tomorrow I hope, and there will likely be some good college basketball on as well.
Speaking of college basketball... No games in the top 25 on Monday, but Tuesday brought us 11 games in the upper echelons of the sport.
#25 Texas had a scare against Cincinnati but ultimately came away with the victory 74 to 73. Meanwhile, other teams in the top 25 weren't so lucky. #2 Houston fell to Iowa State in a low scoring game 53 to 57. Boise State managed to take down #17 Colorado State 65 to 58, and look at Nebraska toppling the #1 team Purdue 88 to 72!
I'd also like to point out that #18 BYU continues to struggle after having a flawless start to their season losing to #14 Baylor 81 to 72.
Wednesday gave us nine games in the top 25. It also gave us a number of upsets as well. UCF beat #3 Kansas 65 to 60, Mississippi State beat #5 Tennessee 77 to 72, and Virginia Tech beat #21 Clemson 87 to 72. If you are keeping track, that's four of the top five teams that lost this week to unranked opponents. The only team that remained intact was UConn at #4.
Memphis had a barn burner against UTSA that went into overtime and yielded a combined score of over 200 points. Memphis won 107 to 101.
There were even more upsets on Wednesday with Butler beating #11 Marquette 69 to 62, and TCU besting #9 Oklahoma 80 to 71.
It would have been nice if Michigan State had been able to keep the upsets rolling into Thursday night when they faced #10 Illinois, but unfortunately, they fell just short losing 68 to 71. The game didn't start until 9:00 PM, so needless to say I was in bed asleep by that time!
There as an upset among the three top 25 games on Thursday though. #23 Gonzaga fell to Santa Clara 77 to 76.
#24 Florida Atlantic also had a close call against Tulane winning 85 to 84.
I really don't know what to make of the Spartans at this point in the season. It looked like they might finally be turning the corner, then they drop two quick games this week. I can't really blame them for last night. Illinois is a good team, but Northwestern should have been a lock. Instead, we just look like an embarrassment.
That shot at the tournament in March could be slipping away from the Spartans.

No college games tonight which is good since I will be watching my niece, but tomorrow we have seventeen games on the schedule for the top 25. Hopefully I will have my driveway cleared of all the snow by the time they start. At the very least I will have made at least one pass before I have to do it all over again on Sunday.
Looking at the games, there are a ton with teams that have similar records. I can't even tell you which ones to watch. Maybe the #9 Oklahoma versus #3 Kansas game? Honestly, I don't think you will be disappointed no matter what game you watch.
Sunday gives us four games in the top 25. There could be some surprises there, but lets be honest, you will likely be watching football anyway right?
With two games on Saturday and four games on Sunday, you know I will be watching as much as I can before it is bedtime of the Lions and Rams. If I had to pick one must watch game this weekend, it would probably be Miami and Kansas City though. That could be a really good game!
