Are we too healthy?

I feel I should approach this topic very gingerly.  I know that many of us have differing opinions on the state of the world and the validity (or not) of Covid and all that the past year has entailed.  While Covid-19 is certainly what inspired me to write this post, it isn't at the heart of it.  With that being said, please take your time, read this post, chew on it, and leave the comments section for the real discussion (which I will get to right..... now).

Like many people (again, or not), I have a bottle of hand sanitizer sitting right on my desk.  It is right in front of my keyboard just below one of my monitors.  When I leave my office and come back, the first thing I do before logging back into my computer is put some of the hand sanitizer on.  

I was contemplating this ritual that I have gotten into the other day and it occurred to me that I legitimately can't remember the last time I was sick (knock on wood).  In the past, I was always good for at least two or three good colds per year.  My wife and I work in a public school district.  The little baddies that you are prone to catch through the year is usually off the chart.  My wife had a run where she got strep throat at least four years in a row and I think one year alone she caught it three times.

Yet here we are, neither of us have had nary a sniffle a snoot or a cough.  While this may seem like a good thing, there was a little voice in the back of my head questioning how great this really is.  

I could be wrong, but part of me feels like we need those sicknesses to keep our immune system in shape.  I started wondering how many years you can go without getting the cold before you finally do and it hits you like a mac truck.  Simply because you haven't been regularly building up the antibodies or whatever it is inside of you to battle it.

In this world of incessant sanitation, are we actually setting ourselves up to be steam-rolled by something as simple as the common cold in the future?

Which leads me to why I posted this post in the Natural Medicine community.  A long time ago I purchased a book from Amazon called The Green Pharmacy.  It was filled with all manner of treatments and applications of plants and herbs for medicinal benefit.  I firmly believe that there are some (or many) things that can be cured with "alternative" medicine.  That's a funny word right since really nature was here first and what we use these days as medicine is really the alternative.

But I digress...

Have you spent some time considering the scenario I outlined above?  Do you think that by being so healthy we are setting ourselves up for issues down the road?  Is there a natural alternative that can give our immune system a workout so it is ready for that next time we do get a cold?  Green Tea?  Black Tea?  Echinacea?  Colloidal Silver?

Without stimulation our immune system doesn't keep up; and on the other hand this sanitized world is also quite toxic.
Maybe some hydrolate for the hands, and Echinacea during cold times to give a little kick to your immune system?

We talk about this on a regular basis in my circles but mostly we end up going down a "we are old now" route and not understanding the youth of today.  We tend to remember playing outside coming home covered in dirt and leeches and how we were probably exposed to a lot of bacteria in our childhoods.  I don't know how much of an impact being "too clean" can be but it would be interesting to find out if there is some correlation between it and how sick one can get later in life.  

I too haven't gotten sick with much regularity and remember being sick quite often in the past.  Who knows, maybe complete prevention isn't the way to go.  In the meantime there isn't really anything we can do about it because this is the way the world is now.  :)

That is true, this is just kind of the world we live in now.  I hear they are kicking around brining back mask mandates for certain areas. I always kind of wondered if we would eventually take the East Asia route and just be wearing them everywhere all the time from now on.  Based on what you have said I am guessing a lot of the reasoning over there is the air quality, but I could be wrong.

well previously it was air quality and some people would wear them as a courtesy if they were feeling ill.  Now it is of course because it is required.  I'm sure that a lot of folks look forward to the days when they can take them off for good.  Here's to hoping that day comes sometime.

In life I usually don't use hand sanitizer as much as I have since the outbreak, but I am a hand washer. 

Even when I worked with the kiddies, I never got sick. Even when my kids are sick, I don't get sick. 

When I do get sick, it lasts maybe a few hours, an evening. 

So, yes, I am afraid that we have been over sanitizing and killing our ability to fight certain germs. 

No. I don't think we "need" to be sick. The whole point of having a strong immune system, is that we don't get sick, even when we are exposed to those germs.

This is a really interesting concept. I think a lot of it has to do with balance. Some germs can help us build our immune system, but a really filthy environment is more than it can handle. Then being overly clean is being found to leave us defenseless if something does get through and possibly cause auto immune disorders where the immune system doesn't know what to attack so attacks the body's own cells instead. 

Perhaps the question is, are you not getting sick because you're avoiding germs or because your immune system is working well? If it's the latter, then I don't think it's a bad thing. The former could be more dodgy, because then your immune system isn't learning and look why happened to the indigenous people when Europeans arrived in their land.

My gut tells me that it is the former.  While I have been exercising more and eating better in the past year, I have also been avoiding germs.  More frequent hand washing and sanitization, reducing close contact with others, we have all been doing that sort of thing.  Maybe I am just trying to create correlations where there are none. :)

Thank you!  I hope that isn't the case!  I remember my first year working in a public school.  I was introduced to more germs than I had probably ever seen in my life.  I think I got sick three or four times in that year.  I found out later that is pretty typical with most education professionals.  I certainly hope that isn't the road we are going down here...

I did not hear that. I know my niece had a heart condition that usually goes unnoticed until it is too late but since she had covid they were watching her health very closely and caught it in time.

I suspect that exposure to various germs in childhood may give us a stronger immune system. I see to many ads about sterilising household surfaces, but we have never been so rigorous in that and the kids were fine. I do not use hand sanitiser generally, but have used it during Covid times where it is made available. I've not really been sick since just before the pandemic kicked off. Part of that may be just not being around many people. I have not seen the stats, but I would expect a lot of the common illnesses to have had less cases lately.

Some people may be more cautious in future and we could see everyday mask wearing as has been common in parts of Asia for years. I don't know how much we can rely on natural immunity as you can't know ahead of time if you have it when another pandemic comes along.

I think you could be right about. Just not being in close contact with others. I do know I am much more mindful about what I touch and things like that at work.  I guess time will tell. I have a feeling I am just being a little paranoid.

I was about to say this and then just read it. Getting the basic cold and cough is important to keep the antibodies which help us to fight the diseases. Also, cold and cough are not diseases, these are just symptoms.
