Out of Sight, Out of Mind

I have mentioned this before I think, but it is really amazing to me how little I pay attention to my traditional investments now that I am so heavily invested in cryptocurrency. It wasn't uncommon for me to check my portfolio and the stock charts at least once if not multiple times a day. These days, it is more likely I will check the status of my stocks and mutual funds maybe once per week if not every other week.

Part of me wonders why that is the case? Is my heart just not in the traditional investment world anymore? Given the relative volatility of crypto, do I see those fiat investments as "more stable" and therefore not worth worry about as much? Maybe it is a combination of both those things (plus a couple more), I honestly don't know for sure.

In contrast, crypto has basically consumed my life. I check my holdings at least once or twice per day. In fact, I have a favorite token feed running on a dedicated fifth USB monitor connected to my desktop. It is a bit of an addiction.

I remember seeing a meme a while ago that I can't find right now, but it basically said this:

> You know how a toddler discovers a new tv show and it totally consumes their whole life... That is adults with crypto.

I might have missed a couple of words, but that is the gist of it. I had to laugh when I saw it. A friend of mine who is apparently not into crypto posted it on his Facebook page and I didn't know if I should be offended or honored, because that is absolutely me.

I mean look, I basically go on and on about it for at least 500 words every day. That doesn't include comments or all the time I spend on Discord and Telegram. I am sure a lot of us here feel the same way.

Meanwhile, those other investments are still sitting there making me money, I just don't really care about them as much anymore. I mean who cares about a couple dollar increase in the price of Apple stock when Hive is doing a 2x right?!

I am sure once we get to the end of the year I will probably be taking a closer look at those accounts. November into December is the time of year when capital gains and dividends are paid out, for me it is one of the clearest views on how your investment is compounding.

I am I alone in this or have you kind of put your traditional investments in a "set it and forget it pattern" while you focus more of your time and energy in crypto? I can't the attention it would day trade the traditional markets and the crypto markets on a daily basis. Heck, I don't day trade either of them because it takes way too much focus and attention for me to handle.

I'm with you there.  I am sure there are apps where I could check my traditional investments but i don't have them.  When i was in my early 20's I invested a decent chunk of cash into index funds because that is what we were "supposed to do" back then. In the past 20 years I hadn't even looked at it a great deal but the other day finally reestablished the capability to monitor it.   While it has seen about a 7% per year growth, these are numbers I just kind of chuckled at compared to what I am used to seeing in crypto.  

I guess you could say that I am glad I did it but the fact that by the time I can cash that investment out without paying tax on it (which is currently 65 years of age) it will have made about as much as I make in 18 months casually investing in crypto whilst still not truly understanding candlestick graphs.

I don't regret my investments either, but it is definitely lopsided compared to what we are seeing on the crypto side of things. I think it is still a good way to hedge your bets and diversify your portfolio.

I prefer not to check prices everyday. Rather than doing that, I prefer to just set notifications when certain prices are reached since I have zero plans on getting caught up in the FUD or FOMO.

I tried doing the notifications thing once upon a time.  My phone was going off pretty much every three seconds.  It was ridiculous.  Things are just too volatile on the crypto side.

It could be an issue but I think it's better to place notifications on key areas. It may get a bit annoying but I guess it just means you need to place better levels to consider.

I have a 20% weighting in a Physical gold and silver ETF with that portfolio and my Advisor made me sign a waiver stating that I chose to weight it that way against company policy for my, "TOP TEN REASONS to hold PMs" and lectured him for a good half hour and drove the point home by showing a tube of silver Maple Leafs. By now he will realize 75% of what I predicted has come true.

Your not alone.. I have traditional stocks which I now find dull as dishwater. I sold a few of them which stopped paying dividends over the covid period. I check every few months and syphon out the dividends. 2-4% is crap.

I have pensions and other things that I just get periodic statements for, but I don't follow the traditional markets. Crypto is just so volatile though. $HIVE jumped over 100% today! Some huge volume, but I just hope it finds a new, higher level to settle at. Things like this may get it more attention. I can't sell what I have quickly and I'm not going to buy lots, so this is just fun to watch. I could spend more time trading, but I'm not desperate for more money and so will do other things.

Yeah, this seems more like a blip to me.  It is fun to watch, but ultimately I am a bit indifferent.  I want to see $2 to $3 sustained for a year or more.  That is what I am looking for.  Solid support that could be life changing.
