Some Of My Own Advice For Depression Written In Verse
So while flipping through Facebook today, I see that a close friend of mine is going through some depression. We are close from way back and have a relationship that was built through hardships. Lets just say, we don't hold back. When I initially read his post, I responded with something similar to this. Shut your damn mouth. Boy you know better than to talk that way. I wanted to say I didn't mean to come across as an asshole, but that wasn't true. So I told him, it was my intention to come across as an asshole. I finished it with I'll always have your back, I've proven that so I don't want to hear him talking that nonsense. The only say I wanted to see or hear that from him was in bars.

I know that was a little harsh, but he needed that tough love so to speak. He knows I'll speak my mind with him, whether he wants to hear it or not. One thing I've always admired was my buddies ability to use words, he's truly a word smith. It had been awhile since I had read anything new he had wrote, so I tried to coax some lines out of him. I responded to just a normal comment with this.

I sit here and watch you create a false vision.
We both know what's truth. It's the scars and incisions.
We cause to ourselves, people ask what's to gain?
A mental destruction or physical pain.

A welcome distraction when  blood starts to flow
We feel a rare comfort. We feel in control.
Release of the toxins, now body will cleanse
This scares normal people, won't ever make sense.

But look it's just me, we've both seen it all
The lowest rise high, while the upper class fall
Depression is hard, yeah I fight it too
So this is a challenge to try something new

Take time to reflect, we all have that trait
That fuels all your doubt, your self worth, and self hate.
So start here with change, when you're ready to try 
Might find that depression is nothing but lies.

When I start to feel, depressed and resigned.
I slow down my thinking, then focus my mind.
The problem I have, time spent in my head
Leaves me torn, ripped, and broken. I wish to be dead. 

I'll never give in, I'll stand strong and fight
I'll beat on my chest just to show off my might.
Cuz I'll never back down, and neither will you
So stand up, take charge, then just do what you do. 

I've been where you've been, and I've felt what you've felt.
And know that it's just a bad hand you got dealt.
You know that I'm right so I'll leave it right there.
I'll wait for your bars, a response with some flare.


He did respond with a quick few lines which is always cool in my book. He took it one step further though. He found an old poem he hadn't shared before, and instead of typing, he got on Facebook live and read it to everyone. He had said he wasn't in the writing mood, but I know his ability. That can't be something you just shut off.

So thank you for your time. I tried to make this poem a bit more encouraging instead of my normal gloomy overtones. I hope you all enjoy.
