Other day at work Me and my colleagues were talking about same topic and Yes, if quantum computers are viable and become affordable or democratized lot of current encryption methodologies(4096 bit encryption by SHa256,EDHD..etc) will be obliterated and easily be cracked. Crypto currencies also based on same SSL encryption algorithms so there is very good posibilty that quantum computers can mint Bitcoins or compromise decentralized block chain network or inmate 51% attack. There is lot of chatter going around the world on how to get ready by 2030 which they think there will be quantum computers or super computers all over world. There is also new thumb prints and new lattice based cryptos been added to Open SSL library which can with stand quantum computing. We shall see how future computing can change the fate of current crypto currencies and encryption methodologies.
