Dragon Fruit - Adding them to my list of plants to add to the Nursery Stock

My time on the farm is running short, and at the moment I am getting all kinds of things packed and ready to take with on what I am hoping will be my last journey to Durban.

I have collected and harvested three different cultivars of Dragon fruit that I plan on propagating in the my nursery.

The first being the wild dragon fruit, this one is easily distinguishable by its vicious thorns, and is currently in fruit.

All of the dragon fruit varieties are easy to grow, but its a long wait for them to fruit, some can take up to 8 years when grown from seed, so propagating them from an older plant does reduce the wait on the harvest.

The second is a young red dragon fruit that I had bagged over a year ago.

And lastly is the Golden dragon fruit, the mother plant is over 20 years old, and is currently coming into flower.

The sad part is that I will miss the flowers opening this year. These flowers normally open for one day only, and the tricky part about getting this plant to fruit is that these dragon fruit flowers do not self pollinate, so if there is any hope of these plants baring fruit you would have to cross pollinate the flowers by hand.

Just look at this gorgeous sight of the dragon fruit that has made its way to the canopy of this amazing Kiaat tree.

All of the dragon fruit that I have collected will be cut up into approximately 10 cm pieces and left to dry out at the ends for a few days before planting them back into individual bags, so that they can eventually become fruit baring plants of their own.

Dragon fruit plants are reasonably hard to come by, and as you can imagine a uncomfortable joy to work with, with all those thorns, so I am hoping that I will be able to reach a good price for these healthy cuttings.
