If you are a fan of auto racing in the US you know that the Nascar season officially began last weekend with the Daytona 500.

Last week’s opening race had their worst TV viewership since the race began in the 1970s, pointing to Nascar’s continued struggle to attract viewers, perhaps due to few polarizing figures in the current field.  Despite that, the races must go on, and I enjoy catching the occasional race.  The Daytona 500 had a rough finish, and the last 20 laps seemed to take 2 full hours as they kept crashing on the restarts, creating a lot of clean up each time. 

This Sunday, the Monster Energy Nascar Cup series heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500.  Last year’s winner, Kevin Harvick, looks to overcome a bad first week of the season, as is most of the field after more than half of the racers did not finish last week due to crashes.   This a mile and  a half track, and it will be interesting to see if Martin Truex Jr. can continue his dominance on the 1.5 mile tracks in this new season and with a new team.  The young guns look to take over the sport, so keep an eye out for Kyle Larsen, Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliot, among others. The Toyota cars looked strong in the opening race of the season with Denny Hamlin winning, so keep an eye out for Kyle Busch and others in the Toyota cars.
