https://cdn.freebiesupply.com/logos/large/2x/linux-tux-2-logo-png-transparent.png We don't see Tux much anymore but I remember him. I even bought some of those square sticker badges to put on the front of my custom built computer in college that said "Linux Inside" and had Tux on it as well. What a nerd right? Hahahha. My first distribution was a couple years before that and it was SuSE 6.3. I even remember how the manual that came with the packaging smelled. I actually got a boxed version of it at a CompUSA in Indianapolis, Indiana. It came with the CD pack and a fat manual. https://www.suse.com/assets/img/museum/suse-63.jpg ## What Attracted Me To It? I was very intrigued by the premise that there was another operating system out there besides what Apple had at the time and Windows. Also RedHat was doing well on the stock exchanged and that was interesting that something might take major market share away from Microsoft. Microsoft has more recently embraced Linux offering it on their Azure platform which is cool to see. Honestly I just really liked have a computer that had a different interface than what other people were used to seeing. I loved people seeing my machine and saying, "What is that?" and being impressed by how it looked. I used to be really into looking at all these screenshots of different people's setups. Pretty funny. Was anyone else into that as well? https://orig00.deviantart.net/7a85/f/2015/305/7/7/in_the_fog_by_irenegr-d9f88uv.png ### If your desktop looks like that you have to be l33t! On a couple of my computers I'm still going back to my roots and using OpenSuSE and I really like using the Xfce Desktop Environment. I just like how I can set up different docks in different places and play with transparency and for me it has worked well for several years. My most recent installs have been of Ubuntu 18.04. It is a lot more canned out of the box but I'm OK with that for uses on the desktop. ## There Is Something Special About.......... Taking a machine that 98% of the population thinks is way too old to be of any use and making it run better than it ever ran in its life and still get a lot of use out of it. People are literally ready to throw laptops in the dumpster that I can get running clean and fresh with a great distribution of Linux. ## Other Distributions I Used Let's take a trip down memory lane...... RedHat, Fedora, TurboLinux, Mandrake, Slackware, Gentoo, Debian, TinyLinux, CentOS, Knoppix, Caldera, and probably a few I forgot. ## Do I Hate Windows Or Mac OS X? No not at all. That being said I can't stand seeing someone's Windows install that is super bogged down with bloatware from the manufacturer. I just shake my head and feel bad because that user thinks that is what the machine is capable of and it is all bogged down limping along from the start. It is sad. Windows is cool but I have never actually functionally used anything after Windows 7. Windows 8 and 8.1 didn't make sense and I'm sure Windows 10 is fine on the right hardware but personally I don't have a use for it. The latest server I have maintained that was Windows was Windows Server 2012 and I have been tested on stuff related to that but to be honest I don't really like being in there and don't care about it. Mac OS X is cool. It has always been beautiful and I wouldn't mind having a Mac Book but I'm personally not willing to pay a premium on the hardware to run it. Great machines though and I would certainly get one at the right price. ## In Conclusion My nerd side was coming out hard the last couple of days and I thought you guys would enjoy this trip down memory lane! ## What distributions were your favorite? Are you still using Linux everyday?

Earn $10 Of Free Bitcoin From Brian Phobos!

Thank you for reading my post and please consider following me @brianphobos

Yeah if you have an old machine or even just want to copy the iso image onto a DVD-R or a thumb drive it has a live version you can just stick in and run off the media without installing it to try it out which is pretty sweet.

Well, i HATE winders. It should come with a square sticker that says: ### Virus Inside My first linux distro was RedHat. And it went into some machines that were shipped to Nigeria with as many modems as they could stuff. If i tried to run those modems with NT, it would have never worked. But RedHat ran them all straight out of the box. I really was not expecting that. I have never been into looking at people's desktops. I have only really cared about using and usability. I ran XP till i couldn't stand it anymore. BTW, i really hate microsloth winders because i really know microsloth winders. Been under the cover, so to speak with many programs. You think that the registry is bad... that's just the tip of the iceberg.

A lot of times with Windows if I had to run it I often would have installations that were past their service life. I ran Windows 2000 for a long time and then held out with Windows XP for a long time in one situation. That was mainly on my parents machines. I somewhat do that with Linux in certain situations which usually isn't as big of an issue but lately I have these new installs of Ubuntu 18.04 which is new so I'm kind of current as far as that goes.

My first distro was Mandrake, I moved to MacOS/macbook air for a while, but after latest macbook pro (which is just an expensive toy) I moved back to Ubuntu Linux on Xiaomi Notebook. I'm quite satisfied, I just miss a proper trackpad support and multitouch gestures of MacOs. Probably the distro I would raccomand today is Ubuntu Budgie (becauser lighter in RAM and more customizable) I don't think in a web centric world people care about desktop OS anymore, but it's cool that vulkan games run fine non Linux https://youtu.be/SsgI1mkx6iw

That's cool! I hadn't even heard of Ubuntu Budgie! That is great they have started to have more game support. I sort of fell out of the gaming world awhile back and if I have any addictive behaviors it is with gaming related stuff. I used to Play counter strike for 6 hours strait and then hate my life. Hhahahhah

I have been a linux user for quite sometime now. It was the best decision I've ever made. I am currently running Lubuntu for my DE and been trying some ubuntu and mint. I am not an avid gamer so linux works flawlessly for me.

I'm the same way. I fell out of gaming awhile back so it isn't important to me. And I have been able to make do with the video editing software kdenlive which is pretty versatile in Linux

I have tried Linux and thought Mint was best by miles. But truth is I stick with Windows 7 - all the software is free and easy, and it all just works - Linux drives me batty, but I wouldn't touch Win 10 or ever pay Microscum any money. http://www.frot.co.nz/design/computing/windows-7/

Windows 7 was pretty solid for sure. Windows 8 and 8.1 were confusing for all of us. Windows 10 seems like a virus that wants to know everything about you. Hahhahaha
