The Relative Value Of A Button

<p>One persons trash is another's treasure. But I think the trick as a responsible consumer is to make sure that your trash falls into the hands of the other person, so that it can be treasured. Otherwise your unwanted stuff will simply remain trash.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I am grateful for my grandmother's generation that collected and saved buttons. Buttons these days are just not the same little quality pieces of art they used to be.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In my Recycled Gallery shop, I frequently receive donations of sewing materials. The most amazing, beautiful vintage pieces arrive unexpectedly through my doors. Usually with a certain sadness attached, as a younger generation pack up the home of loved ones no longer with us.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A sewing craft collection is personal, a life long collection of materials that reflect the owners personality and values. Family recognise the sentimental nature of the collection but they themselves have no use for it. Fearing the boxes of craft materials will end up in the bin or shafted to a corner in a charity store, I am given it instead. It is a strange feeling looking through someone else's belongings, a treasure trove of materials and objects that cross through decades of styles. Anything I think I will not personally use, gets put out in the <em>free room </em>in my shop for other creative makers to cherish. I try to honour the original owner and make sure that everything finds a new home and is put to good use. There is always people out there that appreciate a crafty collection, I just have to find them.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This week I received a few bright red suitcases of various items, including a giant toffee tin filled with buttons.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such insanely beautiful old buttons, mixed with retro colour. I wonder where they all came from. The tin itself is eye catching and whimsical. I love it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I have kept a few buttons for my personal collection and am giving the rest away in the shop. I enjoyed spending a lazy afternoon carefully sorting and admiring them.&nbsp;</p>

I have the sqme feelings about old buttons and craft materials. My female ancestors also collected and still collect buttons and other material, so I do. You can use almost anything for crafts. I get so many ideas for projects just by watching and touching the materials. I also post about sewing and crafts, maybe you want to connect with me.

I agree with the sentiment of avoiding trashing things that could be useful to others. It results in me looking like a hoarder even though I have lots of stuff I would give away to people who would value it more than me.
I need to put more effort into matching myself with the people who would take some of this stuff off my hands.

My grandmother collected so many buttons in jars. We would sit together in the evening, sorting buttons. There are so many beautiful ones and some have real history. Some of the old shell buttons were from clams growing in the big rivers, like the Mississippi. I am glad to have some of her jars of buttons.

Oh wow, I thought this was going to be the "Big Red Button" debate...

I've had the big red button for ages and passed on to many friends, most times it became a burden and people would hurriedly bring back the big red button. 

I always told people the big red button came with great responsibility, and everyone seemed to understand. Some were too proud of their big red button, others were timid and almost afraid of the big red button.

In the end it became apparent that the big red button was mostly a problem for everyone except me, so I kept the big red button for myself.

But this is obviously about something else, so thanks for sharing!!

I can't express fully how exciting I found this post. Just a glimpse of an old chocolate tin makes my heart race as to the potential contents! My button tins are overflowing with old buttons,salvaged from old clothing and inherited from relatives button tins.

I know exactly what you mean about the racing heart :) These suitcases had lots of tins - biscuits and little boiled sweet round tins, all packed with the old sewing things, like dress making chalk, toggles, buckles and lace. It was a very generous donation to my shop indeed.
