These days, many of us give a lot of our friends titles that do not belong to them. We call our friends titles like “Boss”, “Chief”,  “Sir” and even “ma”. Many times, these titles can be just to hail our friends and nothing else.

There is not much meaning behind it, and unless you are any of those things, calling you by them does not mean you automatically become them. It is just something between people who are comfortable with each other, and many times even those who are more or less strangers.

Sometimes, calling someone “Boss” can be because you don’t know their name. When you refer to them as “Boss”, you realize that you do not need to know their names for you to have a meaningful conversation with them.

However, there are a lot of people who do not like this. They detest being given titles they are yet to earn. And who can blame them? The thing is that when you are constantly called something by a lot of people, other people who don’t know the origin will start seeing you as that very thing. Take for instance someone that is being called “Boss” by his friends, when people hear or see him, all they would think of will be a person that is actually a boss and has people under him that help him to fetch lots of money by the hour.

And for this, it could be a problem when you need help. You might be in dire need of assistance, but people won’t believe you. They will have the idea that you have a lot of money and you are just teasing them by asking for money. This is sad, but it happens. Another reason people try to fight this kind of treatment is because of billings.

If people start seeing you one way because of what you are being called, many of them will get the idea that you have a boatload of money and you will be willing to give it to them just like that. And so, to avoid any form of billing, no matter how it is disguised, they shoot it down before the person can even think of taking off.

I think the worst case of this that I’ve seen is of a friend of mine. This guy just loves to use titles, and he used them everywhere, especially on the workers that were working for him. He calls his employees Boss and addresses them as Sir. And in my opinion, I believe it is bad.

Calling your employee Boss when you both know who the actual boss is just screams hypocrisy! You might think it will bring you closer to your employees, but it will only make them see you as a fraud, someone that will say anything just for attention. But then, just my thoughts.

Am I saying we shouldn’t be free with our people? No, on the contrary, we should be getting closer. I’m just saying that there should be a line that shouldn’t be crossed. And as far as being social goes, the line must never be crossed. We can be close to those who work for us without going overboard.

So, my dear friends, if you want to call people “Boss” and “Chief”, feel free knowing the kind of people you roll with will determine what people will see you as. And that is what they will discover. 

We’ll see about all that, I guess.

Being called those names attracts billings and that's why I detest when called names that doesn't belong to me.

A lot of people call people names just to divert attention from themselves and for whatever reason it's been done, I don't appreciate it.

I don't love to listen word "Boss" from any friends. It give me a feeling like distance created between friends. I believe in friendship there is no boss or everyone is boss. It's doesn't matter how much strong background we have..

"Boss Boss Bruno!" I hail ohhh! 🙌🤣🤣

It's very funny, and sad maybe, that this the norm now. The truth, however, is that there are underlying motives behind it. The messages are often subliminal.

I am guilty of using these terms. I use for people that we have some level of rapport, and we may just want to "lift ourselves" a bit. But really, it's unnecessary.

Some people, on the it hand, don't really mean well when they say it. In short, it's being hypocritical, especially when situation doesn't require it.

I sure wouldn't be calling my employee "boss" or "sir." That's just wrong and unnecessarily self-deprecating.

I think it is okay when peers call each other that. And by peers, I don't just mean age. Also people in the same earning bracket, that way if one calls the other Boss, it won't be taken out oof context.

When one earns more than the other, then the word "Boss" would be taken very differently.
