Honestly, I’m sure that if people had the opportunity to modify the genes of their babies before they’re born, I can assure you that many of them would take the opportunity. They will modify the genes, make them as perfect as possible, and if they could, they would even make the baby a superhuman. Anything at all that would give the child a better chance at life.

I know that this is coming treacherously close to humans playing God. Because one of the beauties of being humans is the fact that we’re not perfect, and we’ve learned to accept our imperfections. However, we only accept that because we don’t have the power to change it, and there’s no use feeling bad over something that’s beyond your power. Once you have the power to change it, it’s no longer an imperfection or a flaw, it’s a choice.

I, for one, if I had such an opportunity, I’m definitely going to take it! I’d make the immune system of my babies so strong that they won’t ever need to know what a hospital looks like. There would be no flu, no organ failure, no terminal illness. That would be my choice.

I know that many would prefer to edit the genes to provide them with specific talents. Maybe you want your baby to be a talented singer, or a skilled footballer, that would be your choice, but it would also be you making permanent choices for a child. Because no matter how skilled you make them, you can’t rewire their minds. If they don’t like it, they simply won’t give it the amount of drive that you need them to.

Take me for instance, I used to draw back when I was young. My family is just, I think I still have some of my works till now. However, I never really took it seriously. And when I found out that I could write pretty well, drawing took the backseat. And pretty soon, I didn’t make any moves to get better. And now, I have to copy from something else if I want to make a good work of art.

But then, this skill made me one of the best students in Technical Drawing, both in secondary school and in my ND1. While others were having issues with complex topics, I only needed one lecture to understand it, and I would be doing it all on my own. My work was always neat and clean, and I really enjoyed it. However, since I left ND1, the only time I’ve drawn something was in several cases where I had to draw diagrams.

So, having a skill doesn’t necessarily mean one might want to use it to the fullest potential. I know people with beautiful voices who are just content singing in their local choir. They’re not interested in taking it any further. I know skilled footballers who just want to play football for the love and passion, and not for the money. So, they stick to street football.

So, you could make your babies the most talented in the world, but in the end, it’s what they want to be that they would end up becoming. Even you won’t be able to stop them. And that’s why I’ll give them the best health, I’d make it 100% if I could.

This is from someone who has lost a family member to a terminal illness. Believe me, there is nothing quite as scary as having to rush a loved one to the hospital. Not once, not twice, but multiple times. If you had a chance to save future kids from such a fate, you’re definitely going to take it. I’d make them so healthy that it would be illegal because hospitals will run out of business if everyone decided to do that. Lol!

But then, if only wishes were horses…
