Being without a phone now is no longer an easy task. As it stands, one has to make a conscious decision and has to be intentional about the choice not to use the phone. Because if you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself with a phone in your hand at every waking moment. And for those of us who work online, it can be even worse. For me, it doesn’t matter if I’m working on my laptop; my phone will be right beside me, active as well. 

But then, is this a surprise? Considering everything that the phone can do now. And how, despite how expensive it is to get data for internet access, people still have to be online. We all have to stay connected, even though we don’t necessarily learn anything new.

The thing is, many of us have become so reliant on our phones that we don’t even know what to do when we don’t have them. The longest I’ve gone without my phone was half a day. It was back in Owerri when we had a power crisis, and my generator was also bad. My phone had died sometime that night, and my power bank was also dead. The next morning, I had to take both devices to the shops where they could be charged. My power bank was there for the entire day to be charged fully, while I took my phone back around midday.

It was during that period that I realized that I wasn’t really equipped for being without my phone. I had no novels with me, except the soft copies on my dead phone. I had nothing I could distract myself with, just chores and my bed. I could have played music, but of course, my phone was dead. And honestly, it was an eye-opener for me.

I’ve heard of people getting depressed just because they lost their phones or their phones got damaged. It might not really be about the financial implication, but the loss of the bond that the phone provides. The phone is the first thing that we reach out to when we wake up, and it’s the last thing we touch before we go to bed at night. The phone connects us not just to family and friends, but also to people all over the world. The phone keeps track of every little thing that we do.

And then, when you lose that? The loss will be profound because the world doesn’t stop. You still need a phone, you still have to contact people, but you can’t do that. No one will be willing to lend you their phones because they’re just as connected to them as you are. Everyone you visit will have a phone; they fight boredom with their phones while you have nothing to do but count the ceiling. It’s a major issue, indeed.

So, for me, how long can I go without a phone? I know that I can go more than an hour without a phone. Hell, I can even go two hours. When I’m seeing movies in the cinema or on TV, I turn off my data and keep my phone out of sight so that when it rings, I don’t get to see or hear it. I don’t enjoy distractions at all. Whenever I travel by road, I rarely use my phone except to make calls. I don’t text much, I don’t browse at all, and I sure as hell don’t watch movies because using my phone gives me motion sickness. So, I simply get lost in my thoughts, looking out the window. I also don’t listen to music because after a few hours, I get tired of it.

However, on a normal day, I believe I can go more than two hours without my phone. As long as I don’t have a job to do. I can even go five hours. I would use that time to do some chores, watch TV, and read some books. Whenever I go to my brother's and sister’s homes, I don’t usually operate my phone unless a call comes in. I focus on spending quality time with my nephews and nieces. This is so that when they come over to spend time with me later on, they’d know better than to bury their faces in phones all the time. And when I speak against it, they won’t say that Uncle Bruno used to do it!

In the end, I guess it all boils down to what we want as individuals. We all know our reliance on phones, and we also get to decide to reduce this. If you really want to go for hours without your phone, you definitely can do it. Just replace that time with something meaningful and something that you enjoy. If not, all that extra time will just be empty, and the only thing you’ll think of is how much you need the phone.
