Mazi Eke was "too big for his breeches" as we say here. It means that a person becomes to prideful and egotistical, and at some point they are destined for a fall.

What a shame! Mazi Eke let his wealth get to his head to the point of taking from the widows too. That's unkind. If he was generous to build the borehole without taxing the people, maybe he would have represented the city.
