Where did you come from my lovely? Modern horror is a mixed bag putting it mildly, more like a punching bag from my experiences.

Written and directed by Bryan Bertino. This name didn't ring a bell for me. I notice he did the same duties on The Strangers (2008), another enjoyable modern horror.

Ok so what is this about? A demon. A demon is trying to take over the soul of a family member that is infirmed and close to death. The grown children return home to help the mother and ease the burden as the end is near. The film unrolls from here.

Once the children are home they notice a striking change in the demeanor of the mother. Withdrawn, sullen and at times muttering to herself. Acceptance of the pending inevitable outcome for her husband? Perhaps or maybe something else altogether. We don't know at this point.

Title cards detailing the day of the week mark the passage of time. How long have we and the characters been in this situation? Hard to tell, a day may pass in a flash or linger forever.

Characters drop in and out. Are they what they seem? Or are they something else? Jump scares though present are done as tastefully as can be expected. This is by no means the standard Hollywood version of horror. Psychological tension and atmosphere are king. If I remember your film a day after or even a week you have something interesting especially in the horror genre.

I as the "reviewer" and I that term extremely loosely; I try to err on the side of not detailing much but attempt to paint my own thoughts of my experience watching the film and keep it interesting to read. I was pleased and doubly so as this was recommended through some computer algorithm.

As I finish up the last points of my take, I notice Rotten Tomatoes has this one sitting at the following:

91% critics rating 63% audience rating

The critics are correct on this one. Certainly not a 90% but enjoyable if you enjoy the horror genre.

As a last note, I am reminded why I never watch trailers. I was debating adding the trailer to this posting and I ended up watching the trailer after finishing the film. Don't. I understand the purpose of the trailer but my oh my do they spoil the film. Happy trails.

Downvotes are not meant to be taken personally although it can be hard to convince a newbie of that. One can never be sure without them leaving a comment, but usually it means they disagree with the amount rewarded. I see @buildawhale took off 8, so you were around 24ish. @themarkymark who runs it seems to be a fair person and I think he would comment if he had any other issue.
