By the time the DotCom Boom had peaked in 2000 my Internet Business was already starting to stagnate. One of my big mistakes with the entire venture was that I was trying to grow the business organically and locally, while my competitors were spending bucket loads of easy money (from various Capital Raisings) to buy market share. While I was growing, they were growing by a lot more and they were undercutting me. I’ll talk more about that in Part 4, but there was one big warning that I should have taken heed of at the time the DotCom Boom was peaking. One signal that my older self is now on the lookout for. A signal that should have warned me to get out because we were near the top…
[Source](https://steemkr.com/bitcoin/@robsverdict/is-bitcoin-like-the-dot-com-bubble)
It was a quieter day in the shop (my Internet Café) and this very nice lady came in and started apologising to me. I was a little bit dumbfounded at the time, but she was trying to explain to me that the local City Library was now offering cheap/free internet access and while she had resisted it she was sorry that it was happening. Of course, my naïve younger self felt bad for her and I immediately forgave her. I didn’t think a lot of it at the time because I had a reasonable number of regular locals who would come in to use my internet terminals and I had built a rapport with most of them. However, I was complacent and I didn’t realise at the time that her apology was a warning and a death knell. A decent segment of my business was now competing with the taxpayer and it wasn’t a level playing field.
[Source](http://blakepenfold.com/news/post/reforms-to-business-rates-appeals-system-3/unlevel-playing-field)
I still would do OK during the Summer months when tourists would visit, and I still had some business from the gamers – though let’s face it, they were kids and hardly cashed up customers. I didn’t really notice a turning point where I started losing my local regulars, but the Internet Café business started to dry up as the DotCom bubble was peaking. In hindsight there was a lesson for me here too, but it would take me years to realise it.
[Source](https://www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/2266293-funny-joke-slow-learner-funny-joke-statement-humor)
Governments, politicians and even public servants are bandwagon jumpers. They often come in late on a trend and try to gain some control or kudos from it. In the Crypto space we are probably seeing the first signs of it with talk of Fed Coin, or the Petero in Venezuela, or the Russians are talking about launching their own Cryptocurrency. They all seem ham-fisted proposals at this point and nobody takes them very seriously. But they will eventually get their act together, as will the regulators.
[Source](http://persuasionpursuit.com/bandwagon-effect-marketing-use-sell-storm)
The big power of governments in this story is that they are backed by the taxpayer and they can therefore subsidise their own product with taxpayer money. Once we start getting mainstream adoption that means there are going to be votes to be gained by being pro-Crypto and getting on the bandwagon. If we get something like Fed Coin as a Stable Crypto, backed by the US Government and with subsidised transaction fees and taxpayer funded infrastructure….who is going to want to use Bitcoin? A lot of Crypto Zealots like to think that this technology revolution is an idealistic movement – all about decentralisation and Anarcho-Capitalism or Libertarianism. But for the average Joe, it’s about money, it’s about ease of use and it’s about usefulness (utility). Do not make the same mistake I did and expect there to be any loyalty shown to Bitcoin, or other Cryptos, once the Taxpayer moves in to compete.
[Source](https://www.21triangles.com/Blog/why-you-shouldnt-reward-employees-for-loyalty)
I might be wrong about all this, and I genuinely hope that I am because I am a Libertarian myself and despite my cynicism I still am a bit of an idealist at heart. But if I see a serious and half-competent move by Government into the Crypto space as we are in the process of gaining mainstream adoption….well that is probably the time to ring the bell and exit stage left. _____

**Images and Credits** http://blakepenfold.com https://www.teepublic.com http://persuasionpursuit.com https://www.21triangles.com

I've just caught up with this series, very interesting to hear about your past exploits and some thoughts on the future. Back in the 90s I was being paid to use a dial up, and being paid to browse (at work), and being paid for others to browse cause i'd installed the tool bar on their machines too! haha And all we really needed to do is buy a few amazon/ms/apple stocks :) ----------- > The big power of governments in this story is that they are backed by the taxpayer and they can therefore subsidise their own product with taxpayer money. This makes solid sense, sooo, where do we need to be at present then?

We need a Stable Coin that is fast and free to transact with a friendly User Interface. SBD is potentially the best I've seen to date. It fits the bill if we deal with our current oversupply and fix the peg by implementing the reverse conversion, but that is unlikely to happen because it impacts on authors post rewards and whale bidbots earning potential so it is unpopular amongst the short-sighted.

This is very interesting, and I agree with the premise. However, I think with government issued currency vs crypto currency it would be different. Bitcoin thrived because there was a need in the market for a decentralised payment system outside of government control. A government coin would be centralised (I doubt any big government would create a decentralised blockchain). The need for decentralised options wouldn't go away when this happens. If anything, the government blockchains would help the decentralised blockchains as the lay people would be forced to adopt blockchain. Once they are exposed to it and understand it, there may be more people becoming interested in decentralised chains.

I hope you are right. I think that Governments, if they are smart, could just control the block reward and let private sector run the nodes and mine the currency. Of course they'll back it up with legislation, maybe even accreditation of nodes to ensure their updates are perpetuated. But forking their coin might be considered a form of counterfeiting so don't underestimate their coercive power once they figure the technology out.

Bitcoin is in a bit of a revenant bear slide (mental picture of Leonardo diCaprio as Bitcoin), but I think it's only a little hiatus. I made such a motza (recorded only in the ether of monumental has-beens and almost wases) just before the fall....then met a lovely someone who took my focus off the swings and roundabouts long enough for me to lose most of it..... but it was all just a learning curve - with extreme peaks and troughs - and I'm waiting for the resurgence, armed with my new knowledge. I greatly enjoyed reading about candles and rice (thank you) and I'm glad to see you back @christosthegreek :)

This is quite the experience so far. I agree that warning signs definitely need to be heeded, whenever they come and whatever they are. I suppose that decentralization will take a hit when fiat backed, government created crypto hits the seen, but I wonder what that means for fiat itself? Do they merely transfer one to the other and keep on printing? It seems to me that it would be easier to regulate it and tax it into oblivion rather than competing with it directly. In the case of your internet café, libraries played a major part, but then so did eateries and fast food places and bookstores. So businesses considered it an expense worth having if it drew in customers. And for a time it did, until the wireless phone and the enabled tablets started showing up. It's amazing how many things have come and gone and or on the wane since then. I haven't used an internet café for at least ten years, so it would be interesting to see whether or not they still exist in places like Puerto Vallarta and suburbs of Mexico City where I've used them before because the cost of home internet is still cost prohibitive. Although, I know my wife's aunt and sisters have it, so the cost must be finally coming town. Mexico's Slim (can't remember the rest of his name), made his billions in part off of telecommunications. I'm really finding all of this to be relevant, fascinating and timely. I look forward to the next installment.

Thanks. I think all government really needs to control is the block reward and they will keep one hand on the money supply. They probably then use legislation to ensure their version is legal tender and outlaw forks that can be classified as "counterfeit" to ensure everyone upgrades to stay on their version. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit. I think a genuinely competant government crypto is 5-10 years away at least.

Maybe you are, and maybe you aren't. I wouldn't put it past them to try anything. I think any cryptocurrency becomes more of a threat the moment it becomes a mainstream way of paying for products and services. Bitcoin and maybe a few others are heading in that direction, and some major companies signed on and then backed off (but really, I'm not sure how much business they were doing yet), but until there's a more stable coin to deal with, the widespread adoption of a cryptocurrency is a ways off. Anyway, I'm not an expert, and I already know my logic isn't what governments use to make their decisions. If they want, they won't even really need a reason. They'll just do it, and no doubt it will be at the tax payers expense. :)

Interesting observation. If the state offers the same product, that's certainly a big risk; but the state can't resist muddying the deal a little. They won't offer anonymity, for example. Then some bureaucrat will decide their version puts some of their rewards aside to force users to save for their retirement.... Even if they don't do any of that, a lot of people with knowledge of history are going to assume that may always be on the horizon. Short of doing what Steem does, but actively pushing up the price with taxpayer funds, I don't see a scenario where they pose a risk.

We are talking about the mainstream though. The mainstream doesn't care much about privacy and they don't know much about history. Back in the 90s there used to be a lot of talk about privacy. Now there is nearly none. People have given it up on places like Facebook and corporations now own a lot of our personal data. I think you are giving the mainstream too much credit because they won't care. All the beaurocrats need to do is win the war....and then AFTER they can impose their terms. The state has embraced a modus operandi of Gradualism for decades, if not centuries, so I don't see them giving up on that here. I just hope we get some golden years in first and things don't end up too Orwellian.
