Retooling for Blockchain Development

I’ve earned some good money over the years as a Software Developer in what I retrospectively refer to as my old Corporate Life, although those days are well and truly in my rear-view mirror now. I hated being a Corporate Wage Slave but once I broke out of The Matrix and started working from home it got a lot harder to compete with the remote workers from places like India and Bangladesh. They pretty much work for cents on the dollar….so I kind of gave up on development and sought out greener pastures almost a decade ago.

I did find those greener pastures but sure enough I also eventually ended up finding the Crypto space. When I did it seemed a bit like I’d travelled full circle and this was the logical place where I was always going to end up. Technology meets Finance meets Risk Management. It is like a Nexus….or maybe it's a Vortex that has drawn me back in like a moth to flame. Everything was wonderful in the Crypto space in 2017 but the last few years have been a bit tougher.

I kept hearing people say the Bear market in Crypto was a good thing because the flash in the pan projects would die off and developers could focus on delivering on the good ones. I had wondered for a while if I should be one of those developers. Maybe those greener pastures that had been browning off in recent years were pushing me back into my old nerd-space. I had resisted at first but the idea has been nagging me more and more in recent years and it’s been hard to ignore.

The biggest challenge in becoming a developer in the Crypto space for me was the fact that ALL the tools and technology seemed completely different. I’ve been used to having to retrain and learn new things every year or so, but this was a whole new world for me. Instead of a nice cushy Integrated Development Environment, proprietary code and an expensive Microsoft suite of tools with support just a phone call away like I was used to in the Corporate world, I needed to delve into Linux with command lines and scripts, open source codebases and far from reliable APIs running off cobbled together blockchain nodes with minimal (if any) documentation (that often wasn’t correct anyway) and negligible support. Yes, I had been spoilt and needed to get out into the Wild West. It’s been a bit like taking a cold shower after watching Margot Robbie in The Wolf of Wall Street. I just didn’t wanna do it….

Eventually I got a new development environment running and I attended the EOS Hackathon in Sydney mid-2018 with the best intentions of cutting my teeth on something real, but it was a bit of a personal disaster for me. I had Bronchitis on the way in and while pushing through the pain I smashed my immune system so hard I ended up with Shingles on the way out so I ended up spending half the time in bed and achieved exactly nothing from the whole experience. It was the first of many setbacks and distractions I’ve had since then but I’m still struggling on.

In the back half of 2020 I’ve returned to HIVE to volunteer some of my skills for a community here that I’ve had a soft spot for since finding it in 2017. The development here on HIVE is a bit crude but it is becoming more familiar. There is a niche here where I can potentially build a couple of small services that could be easy to monetise. At the same time I can build up my experience with Crypto as I keep climbing that learning curve. It seems I still have a long way to go, but hopefully I have got something to offer here, can add some value and HIVE can bounce off these lows to have a promising future.

I might not have a huge amount of spare time, but I might just be a good fit and be able to help you get over a hurdle or two.
