I have a few ideas for you to discuss...

Random multipliers that are turned on and off with a dice roll when a user submits a post. 

Random activation makes it much harder for bots to take advantage of the algorithm.

Weight posts in the first hour according to comment number by unique users. Comment count is a good indicator of impact, particularily in the first hour, when the post is most likely to be seen in the new section.

Have a happy hour where minnow votes are worth at least $1, preferably during times when site traffic is low.

A happy hour where all usertags are obfuscated, and post rewards are hidden, giving a temporary equal playing field. 

Have a curation reward floor, and a curation reward limit. Make curation worthwhile for minnows and abuse a waste of time for Whales.

Weight curation rewards by reputation multiplied by post count, divided by the sum of highest post count multiplied by highest reputation. That way each person votes with a ratio corresponding to the number of posts they've created multiplied by the number of posts they've made.

This stops one hit wonder celebrities, uninvolved witnesses, and spam bots from having a huge impact, and gives dedicated and involved authors (who arguably have a vested interest in promoting quality) more punch to their upvote.

Each of these ideas could be randomly activated with a diceroll, avoiding abuse.


If anything, happy hours would bring a sense of fun to the site. Avoid stagnation, and let the nutjobs run the crazy house once in a while!
