Possible landing sites for SpaceX Red Dragon in 2020

<p>Space X named possible landing sites for 2020 unmanned Red Dragon Mars landing.&nbsp;The site selection is based on several criteria. The most important is presence of water ice close to surface, that could support future crewed expeditions. Next is to be near to the Equator ro better solar energy supply and warmer climate. And the surface must be flat, without large rocks.</p>

<p>The first place - &nbsp;Deuteronilus Mensae, seems flat enough in images from a medium resolution camera at MRO spacecraft, but in high resolution images looks a bit rocky</p>

<p>Third - Utopia planitia. on Sept 3, 1976 here landed Viking-2 spacecraft. This image is almost 40 years old.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fourth candidate is &nbsp;Arcadia Planitia. It seems flat ehough even in high resolution images. It is a polygonal terrain, similar to the landing site of Phoenix spacecraft&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Red Dragon space ship can deliver one ton of payload to Mars that could be useful for future expedition. There are options for this payload to remain in the capsule or be deployed on the surface.</p>
<p>Said SpaceX spokesman:</p>
<blockquote>SpaceX is a transportation company. We transport cargo to the space station, we deliver payloads to orbit, so we’re very happy to deliver payloads to Mars.&nbsp;</blockquote>
<p>Initially first launch of Red Dragon was planned on spring 2018, but last month, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said that launch would shift to the middle of 2020.</p>

When I was young I was so excited about the possibility of manned missions in the solar system. Now it seems NASA's budget is continually shrinking coupled with mission creep we are stuck in low earth orbit.

If SpaceX will land the thing on Mars, it will giant leap. Private companies will go there. NASA is too bureaucratic. India have sent mission to Mars for half cost of the Martian movie

Yes. However, the Indian spacecraft that was sent to Mars took much more time as it was using Earth to get more speed, instead of using the rocket as NASA is doing.
