Crevice is an absolutely disgusting word, but Security is not. Heading way back 16 years or more my business was based in a small industrial unit on an estate of 12 other similar units just two miles away from where I am now. It had roller shutters on the front warehouse entrance, an office door with sturdy locks and a pretty solid rear fire exit. But like any industrial estate it was isolated so on a night it was hidden from public view, and the fire exit lead to a little ally with a massive wall two foot opposite - so you could quite literally get away with murder along that ally of 12 fire exits. I think you can see where I am going with this - during our six years in that unit we had one ram raid attempt on the front roller shutter - foiled because we parked our business van inside so the back was pretty much touching the roller shutter. And one successful sledge hammer a hole through the fire exit to get in - because that ally at the back of the units was perfect for people to do nefarious stuff without being seen. If I can hazard a guess around 2004 technology back then was not amazing, but you could get some early basic webcams and connected to your office PC there was various software about on the internet that would use a webcam feed to do motion detection - and then record video on motion, it could also upload video to a server and send e-mail or telephone alerts. I had this set up extra to the usual burglar alarm that would sound out if motion occurred in the building when it was set. So when Bonnie and Clyde (quite literally) smashed a hole in our fire exit and started emptying coffee products they could sell down the pub from the warehouse - they passed the office webcam which rang me up. At 2am. Thanks to the video upload feature I could check the images and confirm someone was carrying boxes out of the warehouse, so I rang the Police and said I suspect my warehouse was being burgled. By the time I arrived the Police had already caught the two suspects, albeit outside and they claimed at 2am "were walking past and saw doors open so tried to close them" - thanks to 2004 webcam the images were too grainy to be admissible evidence. But ultimately nothing ended up being stolen and it just cost two big steel plates on either side of the fire exit door to make it 'much' harder to break through. Not long after that we outgrew the industrial unit, and after searching for suitable local premises found the "shed" just down the road we are still in today. The advantage here is being on a busy street anyone would be more then foolish to try and break in when cars pass all the time, plus the local Police station is a half a mile down the road and this street is the quickest access for end of shift - day or night you get at least 20 patrol cars passing to and another 20 from the Police Station. Plus if you look in the other direction we have housing flats looking straight onto the building front - day or night someone will be passing or looking at our premises. But security isn't just prevention, it's piece of mind - being able to check from anywhere you closed the office roller shutter. And believe me I have got half way home many times only to have to turn back around and head back because I could not remember actually closing the the office door roller shutter. OK I'm ready to leave Get home, is it shut - oh yes look it is! Thankfully security cameras have moved on considerably since 2004, and right now in 2020 you can easily purchase a high quality system online to fit yourself. # IP Camera vs Wired Cameras If you start looking into security cameras the first question is going to be - do I buy a set of wired cameras and have to run a cable from the control box to each camera - or IP cameras that just use WiFi to connect and only need a near by power supply. IP Cameras sound a great idea - they are not totally wireless because you need to power the camera so it needs a power feed for each one. And each camera needs a strong WiFi connection - if you are putting them over a wide area in a big warehouse that is going to be a problem. In fact I know a few people who have IP cameras at home that have no end of problems with them not showing up - through either weak WiFi signal or failure of the onboard wireless chip - a wired camera system comes with a combined cable that has the video feed plug and a power plug - so the wire you run from the control box to the camera powers it and provides the video signal - and a physical video wire will not loose connection unless someone cuts it. I went for wired, despite having 4 WiFi routers around the warehouse the thick stone walls cause dead areas - and like I said if you need to run a power feed to the camera you might as well run one cable that does power and video. Photo bomb by numpty up a ladder with dangly camera feed wire behind him. Suspect No.1 is now using cable ties to attach the camera feed and power wire to the central heating pipes. The furthest camera is outside and looks out on the far left wall of the building, to the left on view is houses owned by next door, and straight forward is their building too. Below this camera is a metal gate so you can not walk down this alley - but it is hidden from street view so checking out people hanging around here is a good idea. Daytime the office door cam captures anyone calling in like this Amazon delivery, plus it will pick up arrivals at the Warehouse. Each camera will issue alerts on motion, while having them outside might capture anyone trying to break in - being on a busy street it would mean constant alerts because of cars or pedestrians just walking past. So having the warehouse shutter camera on the inside ensures the only alerts are when there is really a problem. For the same reason the far end of the warehouse fire exit doors will also have a camera facing them. # Simplicity in piece of mind A 4 camera wired CCTV unit is quite inexpensive nowadays - the cost tends to be paying someone to fit them. The bigger problem is [data protection laws](https://www.gov.uk/data-protection-your-business/using-cctv), in the UK I have to clearly display a sign saying that someone is being recorded where a camera is present, and also make available an easy contact point so if they wish to view the footage of them they can. The can also request the footage is deleted if they were not breaking any laws when it was taken. Plus any business that uses CCTV has to register and pay a fee to be allowed to record images of the public. Overall it's nice to have the ability to check I did close the roller shutters when I get home, the video quality is adequate and the 1tb hard drive in the recording unit should give a months worth of footage before it get's full. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1436/9884/files/HiveWitness.png?v=1584738949 Active HIVE Witness alongside @derangedvisions, if you appreciate the effort and work we put into the HIVE blockchain please consider giving us a Witness vote. That was super interesting, I had no idea about UK cctv laws like that. Security is something we think about a lot at our office. The whole building is very very well protected but I’d love a camera in the room just in case! (Like there aren’t enough cameras already!) I’m mom sure we could probably rig up a streaming webcam easy enough. Great post. Did those original warehouse thieves get away Scot-free?? Or did the footage help convict them?

I worked at an industrial unit years ago where someone broke in through the rear fire door to steal some computers. I don't think we even had an alarm. I'm tempted to get some cameras for home just as a deterrent, but a doorbell camera could be useful. Hope you don't suffer any incidents.

I agree 100% about wires still being better than wireless. Unless I need to be mobile, I still use a wired Cat5 cable for my internet at home over wireless. That's a helluva lotta wiring you've done, but it'll work solidly!
