This is the French Alps quite a few years ago, your expect large amounts of snow high up in the mountains.

This is looking down into the centre of Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK - you don't ever expect this amount of snow here! So much in fact this is the point after 3 hours to do 8 miles - I parked on this path and walked the last half mile to work because the roads were gridlocked.

It all started last Thursday morning at 7.15am, I got up to a little falling snow and headed off to work quickly because I had to drop the last of the previous days Hermes parcels off - at lockers well into Bradford in the opposite direction to work.

When I reached my goal (the white rectangle to the right of the yellow 24 hours sign) the snow was falling thick and really settling.

Deciding that the main roads would be best, I took a longer route to work picking up the main Bradford to Huddersfield road and then grabbing the A58 to Halifax which would take me through Hipperholme.

It was all going quite well until I hit a queue at Hipperholme and then sat, hardly moving for pretty much two hours.

Temporary lights then created a bit of open road - but it didn't last long.

I was expecting the hill round this corner at Stump Cross to be the main problem.

But progress on it was quite good, although there was a mystifying lack of traffic coming down - you can tell how little because the road is fully covered heading down.

It all looked quite promising and then..

Full stop, for a long time.

Still waiting, 15 minutes plus in the same spot.

And so I made use of the extra wide path as a parking spot, walked the rest of the way to work - which revealed the full extent of the gridlock - every upward slope in Halifax had cars stuck on them - which then caused tail backs and that blocked everyone else.
