<div class="text-justify"><em>Tillandsia recurvata</em> L. es una planta epífita de unos 8 cm de radio en promedio, que tiene un sistema radicular básico y suele tener forma de esferoide. Estas plantas tienen tricomas foliares que permiten absorber agua, nutrientes y polvos del aire; pueden colonizar árboles y cables. Estas características y la distribución de la especie permiten estudiar su capacidad como recolector de diferentes contaminantes, como elementos tóxicos, material particulado y óxidos magnéticos.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote><em>Tillandsia recurvata</em> L. is an epiphytic plant of about 8 cm radius in average, which has a basic root system and usually has a spheroid shape. These plants have foliar trichomes that allow absorbing water, nutrients and dusts from the air; they can colonize trees and cables. These characteristics and the distribution of the species allow studying its ability as collector of different pollutants, such as toxic elements, particulate matter and magnetic oxides.</blockquote></div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">La contaminación atmosférica, que tiene un efecto directo sobre la salud humana y la biodiversidad, está relacionada actualmente con siete millones de muertes en todo el mundo y es una de las principales causas de extinción de especies. En general, la contaminación urbana se origina en el tráfico vehicular y las actividades industriales. Entre los contaminantes liberados, los metales pesados y los hidrocarburos aromáticos policíclicos han llamado la atención por sus efectos tóxicos, siendo considerado extremadamente nocivo para la salud humana y el medio ambiente. En este sentido, la flora epífita vascular presenta adaptaciones anatómicas y fisiológicas que le permiten absorber elementos directamente de la humedad atmosférica. Estas características permiten utilizar algunas especies como modelos en los diagnósticos ambientales, como <em>Tillandsia</em>, que es una de las más utilizadas.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote>Atmospheric pollution, which has direct effect on human health and biodiversity, is currently related to seven million deaths worldwide, and is one of the primary causes of species extinction. In general, urban pollution originates in vehicular traffic and industrial activities. Among the pollutants released, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have attracted attention due to their toxic effects, being considered extremely harmful to human health and to the environment. In this regard, vascular epiphytic flora exhibits anatomical and physiological adaptations that enable them to absorb elements directly from the atmospheric humidity. These features allow some species to be used as models in environmental diagnoses, as <em>Tillandsia</em>, which is one of the most widely used.</blockquote></div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Por otro lado, relacionado con la interacción de <em>Tillandsia recurvata</em> con otras plantas, <em>T. recurvata</em> tiene un efecto negativo directo sobre las ramas de <em>Prosopis laevigata</em> que sostienen a la planta (cambios anatómicos en la madera). Si bien <em>T. recurvata</em> aumenta la materia orgánica y el contenido de nutrientes del suelo, también libera compuestos aleloquímicos que actúan para reducir el crecimiento de <em>P. laevigata</em>.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote>On the other hand, related to the interaction of <em>Tillandsia recurvata</em> with other plants, <em>T. recurvata</em> has a direct negative effect on <em>Prosopis laevigata</em> branches that support plant (anatomical changes in the wood). While <em>T. recurvata</em> does increase the organic matter and nutrient content of the soil, it also releases allelochemical compounds that act to reduce <em>P. laevigata</em> growth.</blockquote></div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Cuando existe alta infestación de <em>T. recurvata</em>, la planta <em>Fouquieria splendens</em> responde aumentando las flores de producción para asegurar que el mismo número de estructuras con semillas permanezca en una proporción similar como si no estuviera infestado.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Finalmente, vivípara es la condición que se encuentra en algunas plantas en las que las semillas germinan dentro de un fruto y continúan su desarrollo hasta convertirse en una plántula, mientras aún están adheridas a la planta madre. Esta condición ha sido detectada en <em>T. recurvata</em>, y podría ser adaptativa, porque las raíces de las plántulas vivíparas pueden adherirse a los huéspedes más fácilmente que las semillas sin raíces.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote>Finally, vivipary is the condition found in some plants in which seeds germinate within a fruit and continue its development into a seedling, while still attached to the parent plant. This condition has been detected in <em>T. recurvata</em>, and could be adaptive, because roots of viviparous seedlings may attach to hosts more readily than seeds without roots.</blockquote></div>
