<div class="text-justify">On December 7th of last year I woke up early to take a tour of a mountain near my house. That mountain is very rocky and many big rocks have holes in them. Walking along a trail at the top of the mountain, a large hole in a large rock caught my attention. I climbed up on the rock and approached the large hole.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">I took the feather and the remains of the eggshell out of the hole, sat on the rock and observing the samples I suspected that the hole had been a nesting site of a vulture, mainly because of the black color of the feather.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">The samples were very dirty, I washed them with water that I had brought for my consumption and I could clearly differentiate the stains that naturally presented the remains of the eggshell.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">I later found out that this type of egg staining is characteristic of the species of vulture <em>Coragyps atratus</em> and <em>Cathartes aura</em>. Both species have black plumage but morphologically they differ in that <em>Coragyps atratus</em> has a black head and <em>Cathartes aura</em> has a red head. The species I have always seen on that mountain is <em>Cathartes aura</em>, however, I do not reject that <em>Coragyps atratus</em> may be present.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote>Después averigué que ese tipo de manchas en huevos es característico de las especies de zamuros <em>Coragyps atratus</em> y <em>Cathartes aura</em>. Ambas especies son de plumaje negro pero morfológicamente se diferencian en que <em>Coragyps atratus</em> tiene la cabeza negra y <em>Cathartes aura</em> tiene la cabeza roja. La especie que siempre he visto en esa montaña es <em>Cathartes aura</em>, no obstante, no descarto que <em>Coragyps atratus</em> pueda estar presente.</blockquote></div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">I emphasize that <em>Cathartes aura</em> can indeed nest in rock holes, and also in tree holes, in caves and in places where the vegetation is very dense; but it never builds nests. The female can lay between 1 and 3 eggs.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote>Destaco que <em>Cathartes aura</em> efectivamente puede anidar en huecos de piedra, y también en huecos de árboles, en cuevas y en lugares donde la vegetación es muy densa; pero nunca construye nidos. La hembra puede poner entre 1 y 3 huevos.</blockquote></div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">It is well known that <em>Cathartes aura</em> feeds on carrion. I recall once writing about comparative anatomy of the digestive system, previously commenting that the acidic gastrointestinal tract of species such as <em>Coragyps atratus</em> and <em>Cathartes aura</em>, acts as a filter for the microbiota (bacteria in the intestines) they ingest from decomposing carcasses resulting in a significantly less diverse microbiota in the large intestine and dominated by Clostridia and Fusobacteria bacteria; which are largely pathogenic to other vertebrates. In general, this indicates a strong adaptation of these species and their bacteria to their food sources; it is an example of a specialized alliance.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify"><blockquote>Es bien conocido que <em>Cathartes aura</em> se alimenta de carroña. Recuerdo que una vez escribiendo sobre anatomía comparada del sistema digestivo, previamente comenté que el tracto gastrointestinal ácido de especies como <em>Coragyps atratus</em> y <em>Cathartes aura</em>, actúa como un filtro de la microbiota (bacterias en los intestinos) que ingieren de cadáveres en proceso de descomposición dando como resultado una microbiota en el intestino grueso de manera significativa con menor diversidad y dominada por bacterias de Clostridia y de Fusobacteria; que son ampliamente patógenas para otros vertebrados. En general, esto indica una fuerte adaptación de esas especies y sus bacterias a sus fuentes de alimentos; es un ejemplo de alianza especializada.</blockquote></div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">After capturing the photographs shown I sat on the site for a while imagining the chick in the hole used as a nest and the parents coming in and out or feeding it. It was nice to imagine that, especially knowing that this happened less than a meter from where I was sitting.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Finally I stood up to start walking down the mountain, on the trail, still at the top, I captured some photographs of flying vultures which I show below; some of them with a zoom although you can't see them very well because of the altitude at which they were flying.</div><p></p>
